Title: Estate Passenger Side Wheel Bearing
Post by: steve6367 on 15 December 2016, 18:19:25
I have a worsening drone form the rear, gets worse when weight put on that wheel and better when cornering the other way.

Reading the posts on here I don't think I can do it at home.

£307.20 at local garage - seems a reasonable price based on how long it could taken them?

Does anyone on here do them for beer tokens? (I don't mind helping)

Steve

I've done several in the street, and reckon it's about a two hour job.
The bearing is £25 to 50 depending on how much of a risk you're prepared to take on a cheap one.

Where in the country are you?

Before you start dismantling the car, I'd just confirm that the problem is actually the wheel bearing and not a tyre issue.  A deformed tyre or a cheap budget tyre can sometimes make a droning noise that can be mistaken for a wheel bearing. I know you have stated it gets worse when cornering which would tend to indicate a wheel bearing problem, but I still think checking it's not a tyre issue whichever  would be an easy check that may save unnecessary work and expense!

Have you actually jacked the car up to find out if there is play in the bearing or are you just basing it on noise alone? Also, might not be the side you think it is due to the sound travelling across the car, (if that makes sense).

Thanks for the reply - I've had it up in the air and can detect no play, but I m not sure what else it would be. The sound is very metalic. I had not considered tyres so will swap them left to right and see if the noise moves to be sure.

Yes there is no play but assume the bearing can be noisy first?

In a manner of speaking, yes. Perceptible play occurs a time after noise starts :y

I had no play at all in mine but the bearing was dry as a nun's... It had been droning for several months and had gotten so noisy you couldn't hold a conversation without shouting!

Well I have the bearing now - anyone anywhere near Dorset able to help? All the local garages here seem to not really want to do it so all coming out at £300 +

Its easier and cheaper to change a bearing, than a wife.
