Title: Not seen this before, oil filter...
Post by: tunnie on 19 December 2016, 15:19:19
Oil change on the 3.2 today, noticed the oil filter element had come off it's plastic base thing. It's a genuine GM filter, the one that went on had been in the garage a while.

But first time I've seen it.  :-\

another reason to convert back to spin on :y.

ECP are selling bosch spins ons for £1.68 each inc delivery (or were 1/12/16 when I bought 2).

changed my oil last week without any spilling any oil on removal (jack up car on filter side, insert axle stand, let drain, stuff a few kitchen paper towels under the filter, unspin :))

 ......

I can never get my head around the obsession with spin on filters  :-\ In 10 yrs & 90odd thousand miles, I never had any problems with changing my cartridge type oil filter

Not had an issue with filters, given the position of the V6 one I think they work better given the access.

I think it's just a sign I've left it too long, before I last changed it.  :)

Photobucket isn't playing.

Are you staying the new one had separated from the plastic?  That's gotta be a manufacturing defect.  Certainly never across that on GM or any other brand :o

As to the debate about spin on, the later paper type is far easier and less messy.  As long as the filter is changed once in a blue moon, its problem free....   ....but then spin-on type are occasionally overdone and a pig to remove then.

The filter that had been in for 7k or a year or so, had become detached from its plastic mount that clips into the filter housing. Genuine GM.

Will see how this one lasts...
