i have a new sim (free with talktalk broadband, 200 mins, unlimited texts, 500mb data, works in the mig bose car phone).
i have an old sim car reader (ASB USB smart card reader acr30u-cfc) but i don't have any Win 7 software, can anyone recommend something?
or maybe I can copy to a phone memory and back to a new card (but my cheap phone and the mig phone don't seem to have that option). could borrow swmbos galaxy while she's not looking perhaps... :-X.

You can buy SIM card backup devices very cheaply. I got one from a pound shop ages ago, but you can buy them online.
Copy your sim card to it, put in blank one, copy contacts onto it.
I've dunno if this one is any good but it was the first hit Googling 'sim card backup'

I usually just copy the contacts from phone to sim when I get a new sim.
You should be able to copy your contacts from your phone to Windows address book, this gives you a backup and then copy them to your new phone / sim.
One problem I have is I have numbers for people I worked with nearly twenty years ago. ;D
My really old phone numbers are still on my analogue BT Cellnet handset ;D

Almost any phone will do this tbh, they just have different 'Wording Technology' when it come to copying / saving to the Sim, where your going to become a cropper is if the Phone Contact Memory is bigger than the Maximum Sim Contact capacity (tends to varies dependent on Network). Or a Talk Talk Shop should be able to do this for you FOC.
Otherwise your looking at Cloud Storage Services that offer the same facility.
