Title: How rare is the omega
Post by: Pmacca2000 on 31 January 2017, 07:11:44
Morning,
I've been looking into weather the Omega is Likely to become a classic after conversations with insurance companies led me to understand that any Vauxhall can be recognised as a classic after it's 20th birthday, I've been getting steadily increasing positive feed back about my CD and a couple of mates have suggested I show her in the summer as a future classic.

Going on line there seem to be two sites offering data on how rare my car is, the DVLA backed "how many left" sated my 2.5 CD Automatic is 1 of 15 taxed and there were some 30 SORN if memory serves.
However there also Omega CDs listed without engine type i.e. 2.2 or 2.6.

How rare is my car by contrast stated in the region of 28 Omega 2.5CD V6 automatics  are currently taxed and these are in fact the most common models on the road.

You've only got to go on the bay, gurmtree, and autotrada to see with the amount available that they're not exactly rare.

Finding one that may still be good in a few years time is another matter, as the tin worm has started to get hold of the majority of them.

By all means, if yours looks okay, then show it as a potential future classic, as they are reducing in numbers and not an everyday sight...... not that most people would give them a second glance!  :P

there are over 3000 omegas taxed around the U.K. The majority seem to be CD spec although numbers vary depending on the site your on.
Of that the majority on used sites are 2.2 petrol, 2.2 DTi and 2.6V6s.

I was advised to show my CD because they are becoming less common for the reasons you've said and I guess that's one reason I have one of 15 left

A few years ago there was around 100 Omega for sale on Autotrader at any one time.

Today the number is 22.

Looking like it won't be long before they stand out in a crowd then!
I can see it being another senator, fondly remembered and only one on eBay

Consider also the time  of year and that many Omega owners have two or three and no intention of selling anytime soon/clinging to them for dear life*

*delete as appropriate  ::)

There was a really, really rare one on the bay the other day[it might still be there for all I know] it was an estate advertised as Omega GLS V6 2198cc.A 2.2 V6 must be a rarity surely ;D

I remember when I had my first one in around 2001 there were no end on the caravan sites used for towing the tin-tents.
When I used my last one to tow-about 6 years ago-I was the only Omega owner.

Those "how many left" sites are so woefully inaccurate as to be pointless. Omega CDs are still very common.

Hi all

The Omega B will became a modern classic like the Omega A / Senator B before. But first the "last MOT vehicles" have to die out.

The situation here in Germany is, that most of all remaining Omegas are daily drivers with a long list of pent up maintenance. Real good cars are rare and meanwhile expensive, specially the PFL .

That is a good reason to hold and restore an Omega B. So I do on my Omegas.

The Senator/Carlton is a modern classic, in that when you see one you're reminded how common they used to be. Just like Talbot Alpines(for example), which were on every street.

Omega Bs in the UK are in the same condition as the ones you see in Germany: even a good one isn't worth much, and they've been cheap for so long now that most of them are overdue many of the expensive jobs. They have no image to make them desirable enough to justify a £500 bill which you could easily reach. That means that an MOT failure will end the car's life.

Hi Nick

Exactly! An Omega is not worth to take it to an professional workshop. That is the point. If you decide to hold the car, there is one thing you first have to do: learning! So I had to organize it in another way. All by myself! None of my Omegas ever saw a workshop inside since being in my hand. Never failed at MOT, getting better every year!

Cheap solution to get a perfect car over the years. It works, but much to do...

According to how many left ? the  2.2 petrol isn't listed.
They have 2.5 V6 auto and manual, TD automatic / manual, CD, CD automatic and duel fule so it's hard to calculate.
The CD model is one of the common ones but the engine and gearbox choices are what make mine a rare car according to the figures on that site

And why it's so inaccurate ;)

2.2 petrol CD auto saloons out number the rest of the range 2:1, and half were Star Silver ;D

Post by: Zirfeld on 31 January 2017, 21:39:11
oh... :-\

We talk only about the 2.2?

My choice was the 2.0 / 16V. It is easy to repair and spare parts are much cheaper. 210 km/h are real enough for me... ;D
By the way not Star Silver. The Caravan is dark green metallic (djunglegreen), sedan is dark blue metallic (polarblue)

Yeah indeed. Good Omegas in the continent command a good price. It makes it a bit depressing seeing good examples selling for peanuts in the UK.  ;D

I have no idea why there's no mention of the 2.2, the site seems to be backed by DVLA, the reason I asked the question in the first place was that a nother site listed above came back with different numbers but was far more complicated as there seemed to be a lot of repartition, that said I was tired at the time.

As said, that site and many others clearly using the same database, are woefully inaccurate.  There are a number of reasons why, but the end result is its a waste of time. Ignore it, its utter 'dangle berries'.

The data is all here in excel format.

https://www.gov.uk/government/statistical-data-sets/all-vehicles-veh01

https://www.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/575754/veh0121.ods

there are 3553 omegas licensed of which 1411 are V6's - only 107 are Mv6 Autos like mine - but not split into estate and saloon.

Try the Filter function in excel !!!!

For tax reasons you'd think the DVLA would have up to date info?
I know that's logical but seemed a good place to start, thankfully while my CD is a 1999 car it's one of the few to ba any colour but silver

How long have you had yours Webbie?

Too long  ;D

However she responded very well to diff fluid change, atf change and engine oil change just two days ago. All ready for the dyno now.... so depending how that goes there could be even less in the excel spreadsheet  ;D

Well as you ask, mine has been off the road for a week and a half with a cracked and leaking oil cooler and a bill of £1500 would put some in the scrap yard in the sky.
Thankfully I'm picking her up.this Friday all being well

The answer is in the other thread, about £500 on the Omega and the rest on the '51 plate Corsa courtesy car... could have rented a proper car at that money :o

She's having a lot done and genuine VX parts, waterpump and cam belt service, cam cover gaskets, oli cooler, rear brake disks and pads, thermostat, gaskets and oil gaskets throughout.

Rolf                               Absolutely true.this is most likely the case for many members on here and why my cars would have been long gone if me or someone like me hadnt bought them.

Define "oil gaskets throughout..."  ???

I count three at most...
Title: Re: How rare is the omega

Cam cover gaskets, oil cooler gaskets and one to do with the oil filter housing to my knowledge.
Title: Re: How rare is the omega
Post by: Migv6 le Frog Fan on 14 February 2017, 20:36:05
Oil cooler doesn't have a gasket. Oil filter gasket is just a big O - ring which is supplied with the filter.
Title: Re: How rare is the omega
Post by: Pmacca2000 on 15 February 2017, 13:06:14
I got the impression it's a gasket engine side and not the o ring for the on the filter, eather way most gaskets are being replaced as most of the engine is in bits.
Why has the oil cooler got no gaskets and how does it seal?
Title: Re: How rare is the omega
Post by: Doctor Gollum on 15 February 2017, 13:07:49
Sealant. Far more efficient. Same for both sumps. ;)
Title: Re: How rare is the omega
Post by: BazaJT on 15 February 2017, 18:42:54
Must be the grey sealant for the oil cooler cover plate though, would the sump sealant be the same black sealant as used on cam cover gaskets?

Post by: Doctor Gollum on 15 February 2017, 18:48:59
Nope, also grey sealant :y

I've taken mine out today and as this beetle went past I noticed the fella in the passenger seat staining for ages, took a few seconds for the penny to drop, I was in the omega!
Even furling her I'm getting compliments and it's taking some getting used too
