Of late we haven't had many cam belts come in and to be honest I've been really enjoying repairs (suspension work mainly). However had a 1.9 pisshat in today and everyone had their jobs except me so I had to do it.
Firstly accesss to the belt is so easy. The crank pulley is easy with the 4 x multispline bolts. The aux tensioner easy to remove. Overall it was actually a joyful experience.
Anyway.
So with vw belts I've always found them tight as a nuns. So re the thing I learned..... I want to see if anyone knows the very simple trick to getting the belt on with no fuss at all. 1,000 Bear points on offer....................
-
Is this the trick doing it with it running? I saw a clip of it somewhere. :y
-
No mate. Prob should have explained better....
So old crank n cam locked off. New water pump fitted. New guide pulley fitted. New tensioner on its stud. There's something to do just before you put the new belt on that makes it easy to literally slap the belt on.
Note tat without doing this thing the belt will be stupidly tight to get

I'd like to think that they really wouldn't try that with a customers car.

Ps just to add... this isn't me being all billy big shit ;D I was struggling to get the belt on. And the new lad (who is ex Audi tech) said why aren't you doing it like this......and in 2 mins I was putting the covers back on......
Just curious if anyone else is aware of this :y

Got to be a good thick coat of grease on the pulleys. :y
-
Ooh ooh. Remove the water pump and cast it aside?

Nope. Remember 1000 Bear points on offer :)

Definitely closer than coating the pulleys in grease...

I thought you just locked the tensioner with an Allen key, put the belt on then released the tensioner? :-\

We are getting warmer. :y
When the belts on you turn tensioner with the (8mm) Allen so the pointer lines up with the marker. Then tighten tensioner nut.
But as said its before this to get the belt on.
But as you are getting warmer it's something to do with the tensioner :y

Well it certainly doesn't need to be any easier than that.

Ok, enoughs enough ::) ;D
There is a lug on the back of the tensioner that slots in to a cut out in the block. If you locate the tensioner on this lug as you're "supposed to" the belt is tight to get on. The trick is to put the tensioner on its stud half way but don't fit that lug and have it to the side. This leaves you with enough slack to swing a cat. Once the belts on just push that lug round til it pops in to its cut out. Tension belt with Allen key, tighten tensioner bolt and you're done.

Do I get any points? ;D

No ::) ;D

No ::) ;D
Well that's not fair (stamps feet), I got the answer right and I want my 1000 Bear points. ;D

The new tensioner should come with a pin installled,leave the pin in and use allen key on the tensioner to back it up all the way,the pin lets you wind it back even further :y
