Title: Exhaust. car on ramps and stands
Post by: lesask on 05 February 2017, 10:19:46
hi there readers. Ok I want to change my exhaust system, I have high up ramps but whichever way I do the car the other way round is far too low, i cannot do this job on my driveway like this. Therefore I need to borrow a pit, (if anyone has one Id be much obliged and clearly Id pay you for its use) or could I put one end of my car on the ramps and then jack the other end up completely off the ground and use stands. is this ok? Leslie

That's how every body else does it ;)

Without question put the rear wheels on the ramps and jack the front end up - not the other way round. Otherwise there's no way of applying the handbrake / leaving it in park to prevent any vehicle movement. I wouldn't like a heavy Omega to decide to roll off ramps whilst I was under it.

If you're only doing the system from the cats back, there's no need to jack the front. That only becomes necessary if you have to drill the flange bolts.

I did mine on my own, in the street with just the rear lifted in under an hour.

Take care. Axle stands, ramps and jacks can all fall over sideways given a big enough heave.

Had to take my exhaust off yesterday, with the help of that nice Mr Gixer fella, to swap over a subframe.

As per always, jacked the arse high in the air, undid bolts joining to cat section, removed off hangers, pulled out.  Refit is reverse.

Just be cautious if you need to get the grinder out :-X

If you jack the Axle rather than the Car, your get a higher lift at the back, I normally then lower the rear wheels, or just above,  on to a set of spare wheels I have kicking around, that way if something does slip, or let go, it lands on the wheels rather than the ground.  ;)

Do NOT jack the diff though as that's what kills the mounts...

Probably going to go more like £100 (2 hours), by the time they have to drill out the bolts after thieve snapped them.  ::)
