Title: Omega replacement ?
Post by: EMD on 07 February 2017, 14:47:16
That old story that comes around again BUT .. This looks very tempting  :)

mm I could afford that but nowhere to put the MIL , wheelchair and dog. It would probably cost another 20,000 to get it onto Spanish plates being an import twice removed.

I liked the bit in the ad

NOTHING NUT UBER FUN TO DRIVE.

Cheap car looks very nice, I am led to believe from the MB club that Jap imports are usually very good buys

Try an Infiniti M35 Hybrid.

2012 for about £12000.

It has the 3.5 V6 from the Datsun 350Z.

Sales of 'lorry fuel' cars down 4.3% this month. Tipping point will soon be reached and the the world can finally be rid of derv*.

Two contradictions on that ad: The car was imported last year, so the MOT is out.

If I bought a car that had the power to put a smile on my face, I would end up being very frustrated. There is absolutely nowhere round these parts that I could give it the beans.

My list of possible replacements are all V8,s. e38 740i, CL 500, LS 430.
Misssed out on a very cheap local LS430 on Sunday. :(
Problem I have is that Ive spent well over a grand on the Omega (plus purchase price) since I bought it 9 months ago. If I sell it now, or soon, I will lose most of that money, so Ive kind of trapped myself for a while.
The Omega is a lovely example, but I'm getting the itch for a change again. ::)

If my commute were shorter I and no longer needed to carry lots of stuff about, an LS460 would be high on my list.

Not exactly a stirring V8, but a pretty nice way to get about the place!

I don't think its an age thing as such (I'm a relative OOF nipper at 33), its more that the roads in the UK are oppsing awful, all the time.

If they aren't digging them up they're full of traffic so why not sit back, behind some double glazing, in a leather armchair, with a cracking stereo, and let it all wash over you!?

Not just ugly but awful in every other regard as well.

The E38 and the W220 are, have always been and will remain vastly superior to the Omega, in distinctly different ways.  Personally I have no time for Lexus. Shitty plastic pensioner-mobiles. Like most japanese cars - try and copy the west and miss the point entirely.

I would be quite pissed of if those two weren't superior to the Omega, both cost twice as much and are clearly from far higher up the pecking order.

Personally speaking, the W140 is a much nicer car than those that followed. One day...

True, but then so in theory are the X5/X6 and ML... and they're not preferable to walking.

For what it would cost to restore it you would be better off finding one that has been looked after.

You can do that in an omega........apart from the double glazing.

And if I could find a v6 that hadn't been to the moon and back (twice) and was dissolving before my very eyes or (more typically) both, I'd buy one ;).

That said, the Lexus heated/cooled/massage seats are something else. I've only ever been in a 430 but I'm guessing the 460 is similar.

Agreed. I'm getting past the boy racer stage now at 57, so a big luxury barge with lots of toys and reasonable grunt fits the bill nicely.
Still hoping to have an e38 740i, but decent ones seem to be rising in value, fast.

Yes im with that opinion . Ive always liked the old  LS400 , ok its not the best looking 0f cars but look at all the toys you get and those big comfy armchairs  :) Someone on here owned or owns one  :-\

Be mindful of the timing chain guide issue when buying an M62 V8. It's a very involved procedure to change them and once you've opened it up you're presented with a number of expensive "while I'm here" dilemas.  If you like an easy worry free life it's probably not the engine of choice.

x28i engines are underrated in my opinion. Well maintained they're beautifully quiet and more than adeqautely powerful for most people.

As with most bmws of this era, when they're working they're unbeatable.  8)

Just out of interest, why dismiss the LS 460? Can be had low mileage for about half the £15k and with the exception of mpg is surely a superior motor to the Mig. Faster, more comfy, quieter, more toys etc etc.

I'm not old enough or incontinent enough to own a large Toyota yet.  When I stink of piss, thats the time to get one.

Faster, yeah, in an understated way :y. More comfortable? Never spent more than 90 mins in one, and I was quite happy to get out. But boring as heck and dull to be in.

I wouldn't have a modern Merc, since they decided to stop properly designing cars, which has become evident in the chassis (lack of) performance.

Monaro has practically issues. VXR8 not in budget, and the more modern ones could be a worry leavign places, as it hardly blends in.
Title: Re: Omega replacement ?
Post by: Doctor Gollum on 09 February 2017, 09:41:03
C140 Mercs are still under appreciated and therefore reasonably priced ;)

Although if the Monaro is considered impractical, then a 17" 2 door Coupe might not pass muster, although they are no lower than the standard car...
