Wifey just had a puncture in Sheffield. Luckily, I dumped the bottle of glue and bought a space saver. RAC man has been and changed the wheel and she is on her way home.
She keeps ringing me....the TPMS light has come on. I tell her not to worry. The ABS light is flashing...don't worry. The braking system light is on, the ESR light is on....don't worry.
Obviously putting the TPMS sensor in the boot is f**king the whole system up, but not good for someone who is trying to drive a mobile Christmas tree. >:(
Latest call.......a BIG exclamation mark has come on. Give me strength. :(
-
Don't suppose that a full size spare will fit in the boot ::)
-
Got to be the worst idea ever, doing away with a proper spare wheel.

Fitting the spare to the back of your Merc would probably cause the ESP to have a fit...

The foam won't fix a big hole or blowout. :-\
I suppose I should be grateful that all our cars have something called a 'spare wheel'

No. Well, not in the well anyway. She's home anyway, so she'll have to take 'snotty' tomorrow, that'll teach her. ;D
-
I personally wouldn't run a car for myself that didn't have a full size matching spare wheel, the first thing I did with the mig was get rid of the Spacesaver , replaced it with matching alloy & tyre. The Merc came with matching alloy with unused 15 year old Continental tyre, the tyre was replaced for a new one within 48 hours , the Panda has a spacesaver that can stay put ! I wouldn't travel more than 20 miles in it, hate it with a vengeance.

My Datsun has a can of foam as there is a very nice Bose sub in the spare wheel, early cars had a spacesaver but I don`t think a full size spare would fit anyway plus fronts and rears are different sizes.
Ahh Panda`s, lovely aren`t they ;D

If memory serves the old Rover 2000/2200/3500 used to carry the spare on the boot lid.
Probably get nicked these days. ;)

That used to happen to Peugeot 205`s with the spare being underneath ;D

That was the P6 ..... by default it lived IN the boot, but having ON the boot was a go faster option ;)

I don't know why people get so upset over space savers & cans of good, & no idea why you'd ditch the Omega's spare, I never tried my 235mm road wheel in the spare wheel well ..... never had need to in 10 yrs of Omega ownership .... but I can't see there'd be much room for it.
My Merc's spare is like this ...... https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=fj5mTCUWJO8
Mrs Stemo's car would have been upset what ever sized spare was fitted onto the car if the car had a direct TPMS fitted and the pressure/temp sensor was now in the boot

Those were my thoughts too, sensors were only doing their job :y
I`m not too worried about not having a spare, as someone who listens to music while I drive the Bose gear in the spare wheel well get used an awful lot more than a spare ;D

Swmbo has a tyre repair kit / bottle of foam, sorry I mean used to have; in her Audi A1
Not entirely sure if it was a good idea for her to fix her sisters flat tyre with it :-\ oh well.
They read all the instructions & it said dispose after use, so she lobed the complete kit including the compressor.
Now we just put a space saver in the boot, or rather we don`t cos Audi have bolted the ruddy car battery in there >:(
-
Main reason I like a proper spare don't like being limited to 50 mph as advised on wheel, the rest is probably a bit of OCD just want all 4 wheels the same doesn't seem odd to me.😉

Upsetting the electronics like that, being a Renault, I'm sure it will get its own back. ::) ::) ::) :o :o :o :P :P :P

Don't worry. No immolation (yet). This isn't even slightly peeved French electrics!

Both my Smarts have different wheels front & back, the Fortwo has different size tyres too. Which size would you carry as a spare? ::) And there are plenty of cars on the road wearing different rims front & back. What if your tyres are directional? Which way riund would you fit it?

If I had something that would stop that corner of the car dragging on the ground I'd be happy, but that's too much to ask on a lot of cars these days. Reminds me. Must get a space saver form Mrs. KW's new MX5. :-[

Quite simple really, I would look at the car & if it did not meet all my requirements I would not buy it.

My Signum has a space saver. Only good for a rear puncture. :-\

Wheel well will take a full size spare though ;)

Yes the 2.6 alloy wheel went in perfectly, all you have to do is look and buy one that matches seems simple enough to me.Always have thought that tyres are very important never skimp for cheap rubbish .But then I have OCD where cars are concerned, like everything to be just right.
-
A 245/40/18 definately will not fit in the well on either of my 2 saloons. So I happily use the 195/65/15s "sapce saver" H rated shite that GM supplied for emergencies.
Given how so many on here use the simple criteria of "black and round" for choosing new tyres for use every day, I'm suprised how anal everyone is on the emergency use only tyres.

Indeed. OK, it's not an exact match but it's a "proper" tyre that would allow you to continue your journey as planned. Something that a usual "space saver" wheel, can of tyre weld "run flat" tyre, etc. won't.
Most journeys I make aren't that critical, but, if I happen to be on the way to catch a flight, etc. I want to know that I'm not going to have to miss it and wait a couple of hours for Green Flag to arrive or to limp along on a bicycle tyre. ::)

Wasn't aware you had had a Signum/Vectra C... ::)

Never had a Signum that's Opti , Omega 2.6 CDX before the Merc also had a 2.2 CDX estate scrapped the spacesaver in that as well.

I was specifically answering Optis query ;)

And I was in agreement with you that most will take a full size replacement, not sure about the new models now though , daughter has just purchased a new Zafira Tourer no spare & haven't checked to see if one will fit in.

Back to the OP. Got a new Michelin 205/55/17 95 XL fitted this afternoon, Christmas tree still lit up. Drove down the road and, as it checked all the driving aids, it switched them off one by one. Small chunk out of the lip of the alloy, hardly noticeable, but I did notice him with the grinding disc in his drill, taking anything sharp off. :y

Won't this prove a sloppy fit on a 16 inch wheel. :)

Suppose it would, yeah. But as it was fitted to a 17" wheel, I think it should be quite snug.

But Tilbo didn't you know that doing away with a proper spare wheel-or any spare wheel at all-is saving the planet and stopping us all dying a slow and painful death? ;D Just think of all those nasty emissions that have been reduced by deleting the spare :D TPMS systems seem to me to be more hassle than they're worth Fords are very sensitive and constantly throwing up messages about low pressures for no reason!
.
Ah I see, it is all for saving the planet I admit that I'm not really into that too much , age thing I expect. I just like common sense like you take something off a car that's not working like a wheel & then replace it with the same that is fit for purpose.Glad all the lights on the Renault sorted themselves out though.

It's lucky Steve understood the importance of fitting a 17 inch tyre to a 17 inch wheel. His good lady may be an erudite headmistress, but despite her intellect the the significance of using a tyre and wheel of the same diameter may have escaped her.
It's a girl thing. :)
