I have a choice of 2 lined up ... 2005 Range Rover Vogue 4.4 v8 petrol lpg
or :2005 BMW X5 4.4 Sport lpg , spring converted .
Ive heard a few good and bad about both but which one would you consider the best of the two :-\
Or any other V8 4x4 to consider :y

V8 car...... :y
V8 Chelsea tractor..... :-\ :-\ :-\ :-\

Why do people need huge and sluggish 4x4's (which are essentially vans with windows) to go to the supermarket? :)

As per another recent thread, watch out for plastic timing chain guide failure/vanos issues on the M62.
Personally I'd have the range rover all day long. Preferably the later 4.2 supercharged jag one. Without pov fuel. ;)

Both use the utterly awful BMW 4.4 V8, as used in the 540s and 740s of the era. With mileage, they are fairly incontinent.
Big Bro has a 4.8 X5, its OK, quick in a straight line. Hasn't been the most reliable thing in the world. Currently sat doing nothing, as developed yet another gearbox fault (its had the gearbox out so many times, I've lost count. And its not the original gearbox either (and they are £7k a pop)), so he's stupidly got an AMG S Class on lease while he decides its future.
A 2005 RR will likely be PFL L322 - I think the first facelift was around late 2005, and is a much nicer car. joshwyatt is probably the best person to speak to about L322 RR's. Expect to pay peanuts for a PFL, 4.4 L322 though.
-
As X30XE points out, the Jag engined L322s are far better than the BMW engined ones. Although the supercharged ones are a bit thirsty - I shoved in £100 of petrol to go from Oxford to Huntingdon via Brackley, and back (via Brackley again). And coming back, I was being a good boy, due to the subframe in the boot.

The petrol R500s seem to depreciate quicker than the diesel R320s...........

Toyota Landcruiser V8 best by far, unstoppable & very reliable.

Know what you mean Opti, we have a fairly large 4x4 which lts main purpose is to tow our twin axle caravan which it does with ease , we also do a lot of walking with our dog & like to go to "out of the way" places again this vehicle is perfect for that. I do know of some round this way who just see them as a fashion accessory & they have never ever been off road . Also I have to get to work regardless of the weather and the 4x4 has never let me down on these occasions, nevertheless I prefer the Mercedes V8 to drive.
-
That is a choice of presentation, not engine... both have the same engine ::)

errrrr No ,mine don't look like a van and goes better than any van I have ever driven as for being sluggish no way just as long as you can afford not to be

Apparently, for 'ladies that lunch' in Kensington and Chelsea, a huge 4x4 is ideal for picking up the kids from school in the rush hour. ;)

They say the roads are pretty rough around Kensington and Chelsea M'lud. ::)
I bet the Jag takes a battering on your weekly visits to your club, or is that why you've kept the Signum? :-\ :P ;D

I still consider the X5 to be one of the worst cars BMW have done and certainly one of the least reliable.
So that means you are on the Range Rover....
-
I'd have the Range Rover if faced with that choice

Me too! :y

Thanks chaps , looking online about the x5 it there seems to be an awful lot of cheap ones around and for good reason spares/repairs and costly parts ::) Will be looking at the Jag engined L322s rangie .
What about the Range Rover 3ltr Diesel auto :-\
-
What about the Range Rover 3ltr Diesel auto :-\
Its catastrophically slow and juicy. Quite noisy as well. Pay more for a 3.6 TDV8 or stick to petrol.

I'd agree wholeheartedly with this. Also, they are ONLY bought by those who can't afford to run the petrol version. And if you can't afford the petrol for a range rover, you sure as hell can't afford to maintain it properly. On that basis alone I'd avoid them, leave alone the slowness and noise.

Just hope that the Range Rovers are better put together thany mates 09 Defender he bought in 2012 ,nothing but problems from day 1.
-
Categorically DO NOT buy a TD6 Range Rover. The gearbox WILL fail. Possibly repeatedly. Look it up. :y

The Defender is the same gearbox problems clutch power steering even basic things like the heated rear window failed, paid a fortune for it & has spent a fortune on it total crap.
-
With all the potential expensive problems lurking around some of these vehicles such as the X5, Range Rover etc... Why not stick with something you know inside and out? If / when a very good example Omega pops up buy it. Job done. Unless you actually need a 4x4? :-\

Just evidence that they were still the same as the Series 1's from a build perspective then :D ;D :y

Most recent failure no wipers front or rear, why he keeps it is beyond my comprehension.

Makes you wonder doesn't it :-\ I'm beginning to doubt buying one at all at the moment considering the poor feedback but then this is an omega owners perspective mainly ;D I'll be keeping the Omega as ive spent a fortune on it ::) and wont ever get the money back .. while it keeps passing the mot i dont see the point :P
Maybe time to browse the V8 car section ..I do like the Ls400 and also the Mercedes-Benz CL 5.0.

I have had four 4x4 vehicles since the mid eighties 1st being an old Landcruiser apart from services there were no other repairs of any sort traded that in in 1987 for a LWB Nissan Patrol, the 4x4 specialist I bought it from in Norwich asked what my main priorities were which were towing capacity & reliability I was also looking at a Range Rover he had which he said to rule out re reliability! Kept the Nissan almost 12 years only repair was a fuel pump . Next was a Subaru Forester terrific vehicle abused completely ,towed way beyond its limits only repair were wheel bearings , swopped that for the Terracan which again has proved very reliable had it 5 years had a new battery & alternator in the last month. Range Rovers are without doubt the best looking 4x4 without doubt but that's about all in their favour, as for the BMW just a posers car in my opinion. As for a V8 Merc you will enjoy it 😉.
-
As I am still on sick leave & getting bored I looked at the MOT history of the old 4x4s the only one still around is the Forester T531RFE good old workhorse!

Indeed. There's a difference between Friday afternoon shift defender and every TD6 autobox ever put in a range rover. The latter is like rolling a dice with no dots on ;D

All I know is I wouldn't want any of them even for free, regardless of model .

If reliability floats your boat I don't blame ya. *back off to garage in a minute to continue reassembling the head off the Disco* ::)

Please don't get me started on Discos, my mate had one of them before the Defender, he is a glutton for punishment😂😂😂😂
