Anybody any ideas with raised Iodine-131 nuclear radiation detected in Western Europe since mid-January, with speculation it has come from Eastern Europe and now a US WC-135 nuclear sniffer aircraft, which rarely leave the US, has flown to RAF Mildenhall?

Not particularly accurate .. as they have spent many, many hours around Japan (Fukushima) after the tsunami, and recently around North Korea after their tests, as well as Chernobyl in the past. They have also been deployed to Syria as they can also detect chemical weapons. They actually spend very little time in the US .. as there are very few nuclear "leaks" to worry about over there ... :) As the crews are based in Offut they do go home of course ... :)
"Iodine-131 (131I), a radionuclide of anthropogenic origin, has recently been detected in tiny amounts in the ground-level atmosphere in Europe. The preliminary report states it was first found during week 2 of January 2017 in northern Norway. Iodine-131 was also detected in Finland, Poland, Czech Republic, Germany, France and Spain, until the end of January.
However, no one seems to know the reason behind the released Iodine-131. Along with nuclear power plants, the isotope is also widely used in medicine and its presence in the air could be the effect of several different incidents."
So basically .. still an unknown source.... but that hasn't stopped the conspiracy theorists blaming Russia ......

Also, no seismic activity detected anywhere in surrounding areas....so a nuclear test seems unlikely. But, of course, in this crazy mixed-up world we are living in, a deliberate relaease to provoke uncertainty wouldn't be out of the question.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm . . . . . . interesting
But, the real question . . . .

apparently iodine-131 is pumped into the ground water during fracking.....i'm not making this up :(

Yes, as radiotracers: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Uses_of_radioactivity_in_oil_and_gas_wells#Radiotracers_and_markers
Oddly, the anti-fracking brigade complain mostly about VOCs, they don't seem to be worried about this - maybe because the doses and half lives of these things are so small and short that they're really nothing to worry about.
They've been dunking sealed containers of radioactive isotopes much, much worse into oil wells since the 1950s, incidentally. Like Ceasium-137 with a half life of 30 years. Which was also found in the atmosphere above Finland last year (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caesium-137#3_March_2016_Helsinki.2C_Uusimaa.2C_Finland) - didn't make the news, though, as I guess we weren't being set up to think that Putin and Trump are about to do something stupid with nukes..
[edit] http://www.thedrive.com/the-war-zone/7758/has-there-been-a-nuclear-incident-in-the-arctic < plenty in there to be worried about.

So a fifty year old sunken Russian sub has dissolved to the point of leakage... ::)
Just wait until the Faily Dail finds out :D
