Title: Computer problem has got me stumped......
Post by: STEMO on 22 February 2017, 20:50:22
....and the lad pissed off. I bought him the computer last week, a middle-of-the-road HP. Everything is fine except, when he is playing simple games (say 'the worlds hardest game') where he has to use the arrow keys to move a square to dodge stuff, it either lags or keeps moving when he lets go of the key.
Tried the wifi key board it came with and the USB keyboard he already had, both the same. Latest version of flash installed and working ok. He can use the letter keys to type really fast without a problem.
Don't know where to start really. Any ideas?

Sometimes helps, but no promises ...

Control panel / keyboard

In keyboard properties reduce the "repeat delay" and the "repeat rate" to about 1/4 or maybe even less, slide the selector to the LEFT on both options, click "apply" and see if things improve ..  :)

If you struggle to find Control Panel .. in Windows 10 it's right down the bottom of the apps under "Windows System" ....

It is, Tunnie.

Try another browser.  If you press Ctrl-Alt-Del you can access performance tab which might give you some indication of what is struggling during fault condition.

Would a faster internet connection make a difference? My lad assures me it wouldn't but I don't know.
Or have I bought something too slow to handle what he wants to do. I can't see that though, the ancient WIN7 pc coped well with it.

How fast is your connection?  I doubt it. Most web based things are heavily comprimised due to compatibility issues between the tossers warring factions at apple and MS.  Plus you're not paying for it so you're not even getting the best programmers.

Well....for tonight I've told him to eff off turn it off and get some kip. Tomorrow we'll try a different browser and I suppose it's time I upgraded to fibre anyway.
Thanks for the input.

I doubt both of those things STEMO, that computer has enough bhp to handle a lot of new (proper) games, never mind the web based ones. Also, most games like the ones you describe pre-load all the content before you start so the content is actually running on your computer.

I would start by installing Chrome and Firefox (in that order) and see if the game runs on each of those any better than on the standard Microsh!te IE browser. An alternative could be that as the machine is new, it could be runnning updates in the background. SWMBO's HP laptop downloaded an entirely new version of windows in the background during its first few days of ownership and only piped up when it wanted us to install it. Rand like a bag of spanners until it had finished. I nearly took teh bloody thing back!

Just seen your last post, I would leave it on overnight incase it is running updates in the background, give it time to do whatever its doing in peace  :y

Just looked at the spec.
8GB ram should be more than enough, but it only has 2gb of DDR3 video ram

ONLY 2GB... to run a 2D flash game? :)

If its in Flash, its probably Flash that's the issue. Flash really, really, REALLY should be permanently disabled on all machines. Along with Java.

Is Flash running in Edge, IE11 or another browser.

It's running in edge. Following all of the advice on here and on bleeping computer, I've told him to use a different browser. He's tried it on chrome and..........drum rolll........it works. Thank you all.
