Title: Dropbox
Post by: Entwood on 03 March 2017, 22:14:54
I've had a message that Dropbox are dropping the "public folder" and links to photos from there will no longer work. This means that all the piccies I've put up will suddenly disappear. As they are all old threads (some very old) the info cannot be edited to provide new links. I know that stuff in the guides is safe as that is moved to OOF's own server, but lots of other threads will lose info, and I can't see any way around it ...  :(

Slightly off topic but I now have my own webspace and FTP my images up to it. Am Pig sick of the ads and slow running likes of  photo bucket / shitebox grinding my machines to a holt. These services are slow, clunky, and almost unusable

Hmm, that could be bloody annoying, theres some really usefull pics on this Site not just for Newbies but us old, farts aswell, I quiet often do a search for archived info with pics.

If need be I could probably donate some large Cloud Space other than PB but not sure if that would help. :-\

Well have to get our thinking caps on.  :y

Does that mean they are forcing us to buy into the service, Nige?
Is it too late to retrieve whatever we have on Dropbox, and what photo sharing sites actually work?

Ron.

I've already worked out how to post pictures from dropbox using their "new" system (see test section) so that's not the problem .. its all the "old" pictures that will simply have dead links now that concerns me , and as they are "un-editable"  I see no easy solution ...  :(

I don't think so , simply that "public folder" becomes "private" from March 15th and new system of "shared links" .. which I've worked out how to get to display properly ... comes in to effect.

No mention of charges at all .. :(

Easy sharing of links between individual devices/mobiles makes some sort of sense, unfortunately, the end of mass public sharing seems to be an unintended consequence :-\

We have "unlimited" genuine usage on our images server, and I even wrote an upload script a few years back.

But there are legal ramifications, and I'm trying to keep my online nose clean...

Question for TB:

If you were given a list of the old links and the new ones could you use mod-rewrite to pick up the image from the new location?

mod-rewrite could be installed as it is apache, but a) would muller the poor server, b) stop working in the nearish future

Better ways to skin a cat than that ;)

However, all options would involve probably more manual effort than is viable :(
