So I have an engine purchased from Red Baron a few years ago.
It's been sat in me mums garage for ages and she basically told me it's got to go :-[ :-X ::)
My original plan was to strip it down and put it together again. Well today I realised 50% of that idea ;D I've stripped it down to the bare block. Im picking it up tomorrow to take it to work where I plan on cleaning and painting it along with 4 of the pistons to make a v6 coffee know symes has made a few of these but I plan on doing it meself.
This is what I want it to turn out like....
http://groovyhome.co.uk/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=457&cPath=17_18_49&zenid=bbgik1r2p86e7o06meb8a4i2q5
Obviously in v6 guise.
There are a few rust spots on the block. Was thinking of wire wheeling the shit out of it. Engine degreaser. Cleaning drying. Painting it in star silver of course!
Is it possible the rust may come back after a little while?
Ps didn't take any photos of the strip down but let's just say that with an impact gun and the E sockets it was all apart in under an s I have a shed load of Vauxhall bolts if I need them and some spares. With the crank out it's easily moveable. Tat thing weighs a ton!!!

£550 for an old engine block and a piece of toughened glass! I think you've found your new career, Webby, old V6 engines by the bucketload on here, some of them still attached to omegas. ;D
-
Yeah I know it's crazy. If you see all auto trader omegas disappeared you'll know I've set up a business lol
I wouldn't want to sell it. I've convinced wifey to have it in tut living room :y
-
I have coffee set 3.0 v6 table and 2 x omega elite seats build in frame
was cleaning garage so give them to friend of mine , will make nice set up in his man cave
-
Got any pics Serek?
-
Is that the Top Gear V8 table?
-
Not sure opti. I just pulled a pic of the best looking one I could find :y
-
Not long ago there was someone/a company advertising ones using the V12 Jag block or stood on end they called it a wine rack :D Stupidly high prices they were asking too imho.

Stupidly dumb people will pay it.

Fool and his money are easily parted.
Might be a nice sideline there mr Bear ;D

Stupidly dumb (but very wealthy)people will pay it. :)

It has a kind of synergy about it, though. It's as stupidly inefficient a method of storing a dozen bottles of wine as it is of achieving a dozen miles per gallon. ;D
-
The table looks nice, sadly out of my budget though
-
Maybe a cheaper version in v6 guise (painted in star silver of course) might tempt you :y
-
A 4 pot astra 1.4 engine block could be yours for only £99.99p. Doubt you get a bottle of wine in one of the cylinders though, perhaps a can of coke?

If you take it out of the can ::)

If you take it out of the can it's not a can of coke.

You'll get over it :D

So got the block from my mums to the garage. Tomorrow night I'll be staying after work to wire wheel the living shite out of it. I have a few ideas I want to run past you gays I mean guys....
So firstly I had the idea of getting it sandblasted but that's going to cost £150. I want this to be proper budget as at the mo I have no funds lol
So. Going to wire wheel it all over. Then engine degrease it. Then clean. Then paint with rattle cans.
Firstly I have some rust remover in a bottle (hammerite maybe? :-\). Is this a good idea. I really would like to get right of as much shite as possible as I don't want rust to come back as it's going to go in the living room.
Secondly. I'm using four of the pistons as the base for the glass. Is the block steel and the con rods? If so I can't really be bothered to drill holes, tap them etc (mainly cos I don't have a decent drill or bits) so would mig welding it be an option?
Lastly should I paint it with primer, then paint then lacquer like body work?
-
Surely a chemical clean or even a steam clean would be better than a wire wheel to start with?

Pistons will be aluminium alloy. Block I suspect is cast iron. Rods likely to be ferrous, but could either be cast or forged. How good are you at welding aluminium to iron?

Nah I ain't got the set up for that nor the knowledge/ skill. Wondering about chemical metal

Don't rush it, Steve, have an ask round and see if there's anywhere it could be dipped.
EDIT: Just thought...imagine it chromed....niiiiiice.

Cheers stemo. I would like to get it looking awesome as opposed to something I'd look at and find flaw with.
Is this a chemical dip to strip it of crud? :-\

Where will you put the pistons?
Have you considered screwing 4 head bolts into the top corner bolt holes (ideally with some kind of rubber ball/foot over the head of each bolt for the glass to sit on?

Sorry, yeah it might help if I showed you what I'm planning lol ::)

The other option is to use four long head bolts with some sort of protection o the end to support the glass. That would then negate the need to drill holes

Yup. That first pic is chromed!!! 8)

Yes. Have a google. But it will involve that very scarce commodity....patience.

I can't help thinking that if you stub your toe on that it's gonna smart a bit more than it does with a normal wooden coffee table.
However, if you're going do it properly ring around a few plating places - chrome plating isn't that expensive, and they'll have to thoroughly clean and chemically dip the block first to do that saving you all the aggro of cleaning it up.
Con rods bolted into head bolt holes looks like the way to go. Pistons mounted to rods with normal gudgeon/wrist pins, and then all you've got to sort out is fixing the glass top to the piston crowns.

I should imagine the removal men would be a bit put out if you ever moved house as well. ;D

Chrome in a spray can , comes up really good if you do all the prep work :y

Errrr...no. If it's being properly chromed then it will be properly dipped. You can't get rid of enough crap to get a decent finish any other way.

Got the wire wheel out today ::)
Did that, hit it with a load of brake cleaner, got the blow gun and got rid of the spiders, then wire wheeled it again. Very pleased with the results but there are quite a few patches the wheel couldnt get to.
The plan now is to break out the due grinder with a light sanding bit in to all the nooks n crannies.
I then think I'll smash it with the rust removal liquid.
Then just keep going til it's clean.

The block is almost ready for painting thanks to the apprentice ;D ;D ;D

Can you liberate the spin on conversion before painting :-*
Best not get the apprentice to do it though... he doesn't look particularly enamoured with his lot in that picture ;)
-
Al I had the same thought myself. I assume you mean the threaded portion that the filter screws on to? I blindly stuck an Allen in there but it didn't catch. I'll get a torch in there n see what's what

14mm hex :y

Cheers mate I'm sure it'll come out. Do u want it if I do?
