I was lead to believe, there's an ident number on the binicle, that determined weather it would work without needing tech2.

I'm baffled why would estate and saloon clocks be different?

Different fuel tanks with different sender calibrations ;)

but dash fuel gauges  are all the same so not an issue.

Got a set out of a 2000 3.0i auto showing 189k but working when removed if you want them for price of postage.  :y

Estate gauge will over read... expect to run out at 1/4 tank.

I think the Project MV6 (estate) is running with saloon instruments now. (but with the original MID from the old cluster)

It didn't run out when James delivered it with the fuel warning light on and it didn't run out last week when the gauge was showing less than 1/4 full and the MID was showing 70 miles to empty.

I suspect that the senders are designed differently to account for the different tank shape - The resistance wire on the sender can be wound in a non-linear fashion to give an output that is proportional to fuel quantity rather than just level. It wouldn't make economic sense for VX to make different gauges as well if they didn't need to. :-\
