Mrs Psych runs a website on reptiles with another guy. He sorts all the site stuff via another person who does all maintenance etc.
Anyway.. she is getting meed about and communications are ending unfortunatly. But, if she wanted to continue the site.. or a psudo site... how could she go about this? And what would costs be for hosting?
Not great knowledge between us so would need a competent peron. Any advice?? :y

Depending on your ISP, you may actually have a sizeable webspace free with your broadband account..some are better than others, it must be said (my old NTL one was good, but the Yahoo dross I get lumbered with with BT isn't worth trying to use).
For my own website, I use 1and1 internet - very easy to get a basic site up and running in no time. You have to pay (not much a mnth)...but you do get a free .co.uk address with it! If you (Mrs Psych) want your own domain name, then shop around and either get it free with a hosting package, or pay no more than a couple of quid per year. Some resellers want stupid prices!

As far as i know.....
TB has the main OOF sever at his house......but you would need the skill to be able to maintain it......he also has a fast reliable and not a cheap internet connection for it.....
Picture hosting for OOF is done with a hosting company......
Oh and i believe he gets big leccy bills probably due to the amount of kit he has to have turned on to provide OOF
So someone that has limited knowledge of such things is probably better off using a hosting company.......
If you do a search on google.......you will find quite a few results for hosting companies :y

bit out of my level of comprehension mate ::) Although I get the gist. Tiscali poo for hosting. She is paying £20 per month (plus £20 from the other guy!!) so 40 per month!! I think that silly... but... I think he has been taking her for a ride too!! >:(

I pay £5/month...!!!!

1&1 Home package...their website builder really is easy to use. I was recommended it by another user of it, and haven't looked back...

Trouble with using your own webspace.....too much traffic to the site and the provider will want to charge you extra for it.......not much traffic then you would probably get away with it.
Agree with the domainname.......i moved my domainnames to another provider a couple of years ago......original one suddenly wanted £80/year for renewal......One im with now charges me £8 / 2 years for registration and an extra fiver/year for forwarding :y

Godaddy is one of the biggest providers in the US. Also good value. For a simple site like mine http://www.bandit127.com it works a treat. (Forgive the content - it's a bit of a jotting pad at the moment). Technical support is in US call rates - but 24x7 and very competent.
Setting up is easy, then it's just a case of uploading your website (files) and you're away.
Godaddy is here:

I, too, use 1&1 for the business web site -- in the past for personal sites I have used Freeweb --- you can produce some reasonable sites for free -- few extras added for £5 per month, etc -- worth a peep.
Really depends on what sort of site she wants -- does she want her own domain name etc
-
To be honest, there's masses of cheap places out there offering websites.., £5 or less should be more than enough. U need to look for a server that can guarantee it will be up for a very high percentage of the time tho.., they aren't always that well maintained or watched.

STOP!
Before signing up willy-nilly, you need to have an idea of what technologies you need - not all hosts are the same.
Also need to know traffic levels, and whether you can get away with shared hosting, or need dedicated servers.
Lastly, who owns the domain name?
PM me the url, and I'll look at likely technologies used.

if hostings needed i have a Rackserver via BT discounts of working for them! its running a 100mbps ATM ip link average download speed i get off it with 8meg broadband is 7mbps
its currently got a few unix isos on it for d/l but no one ever downloads them and its hosting another forum a quiet one for the local boy racers
so another forum wouldnt hurt it!
if you want some hosting that is you would have to get the domain DNS tags changed though
