Title: Awful Rattle ?
Post by: powerslinky on 03 April 2017, 20:13:08
The 2.6  estate has developed a horrid rattle on start up .  Only happens from a complete cold start :-\   It's comming from drivers side cat area & if I push on the underside heat shield for that cat it stops instantly :-\

I was thinking it was the underside heatshield vibrating against the cat , but could it be something inside the cat , that stops rattling when the heat expands it a bit.

Noise carries on for about 60-90 seconds then is all quiet again .  Car has to be left for 3-4 hours before it will make the noise on start up again  :-\

Cats are not GM but fairly recent aftermarket that were on the car when I got it.

What do you think guys  . .. .rattle inside cat ?

I'd say because it stops as you push it, it's the outer heat protection thing that's probably rusted off a spot weld thing.

I would consider ripping the outer shield off...

or using a steel "tie wrap" to secure it again ...  :)

I had the pipe sheild drop down onto the road while reversing when I had my 2.5 estate, I thought the exhaust had fallen off.

I got a broom and whacked it off

I also had an annoying rattle from underneath as well. and no one will be surprised to hear that the outer shell of the cat was parting company from the exhaust and when I poked it with a screwdriver it dropped onto the floor rather comically..
