Daughter passed her test today so it's only a matter of time before she starts looking for a car , any tips on keeping the cost down , me as named driver etc or which insurers are good to deal with ?

Tell the insurer she is fifty and lives in a low crime area. This will reduce premiums. :)

Just been through all this with my nephew.more than were the cheapest for a 61 reg corsa 1.2 at £1200
John.

When through this last year with my daughter more than where good but avoid carrot
-
Get her on her own policy from the get go :y
If she/you are able, then might be worth considering a n other new car with free insurance :-\
The reasoning, such as it is being that standalone policy might be £100-120 a month, but a car on such a deal might only be £150 a month.
-
And secondly what is the most "new driver" friendly car she should go for ?
-
Peugeot 108 Just add fuel/Citroen C1/Toyota Aygo or VX Viva... cheap and cheerful :y
Otherwise go alot older... prefacelift 2.0 Omega and get her taught how to handle it safely ;)
-
Just out of interest does that kind of 'free' insurance still qualify you for ncd later on ?
:)

Should do, as it's in the name of the finance holder... if yoofs are working/receiving income or allowance, then there's no reason for the agreement not to be in their name.
Waters might be muddied somewhat if bank of Mum and Dad make direct payment though :-\

When the quote is being done add both yourself and the wife as drivers so long as licenses are clear, drops premium quite a bit :y

I would do it this way round. "Fronting" (putting an older person as the main driver when they don't actually drive the car) has been a significant focus of the insurance industry in recent years and claims have been refused because of it - with decisions upheld by the FoS.
Just Add Fuel would be my preferred way to go
-
Some of the just add fuel schemes have a large upfront payment and limited miles allowance when I looked last year the upfront payment on a Peugeot 107 was more than buying a car and paying the first years insurance
-
Was but one example, Vauxhall did have a free insurance offer on Corsas :y
-
It was a year ago in fact nearly 2 now offers maybe better :y
-
Ended last month at Evans Halsham...
Anyhow, define a budget and spend a day shopping :y

The lad used Hastings essential for his first year as a new driver with me as named driver.
Worked out at 1200 quid for the first year (paying cash)
The 2nd year (1 years ncb) came out at under 700 quid again with me as named driver.
All above is fully comp.
The car is a 45 plate corsa cdti with no mods
HTH :y

Low group car, her own policy and ring round every one, never tell another company what price you have as then they will beat by just a fiver.
Then when you have a price keep ringing different companies and play them at thier own game for discount.
Mine was brought down from £790 to £340 over a few phone calls and the only place I rang was Admiral.(Different agent each time) ::) ::) :y

I wasn't aware the corsa was around in 1945, you live and learn. What's the mileage on it?

Your maths is well out old boy.....
According to your reckoning a 54 plate would be a 1954 car.....
So obviously a 45 plate means 2004... ;D ;D And corsas were about then :y

Bollix ;D 2004 was 04 and 54. Are you sure you're a taxi driver? ;D A 45 plate will be 2045, and I don't think he meant that.

You should do what we did put her as a named driver on my wife's 51 reg Mini Cooper (aged 17.5) £2200 a year.
Probably would have been better to have bought her a Jazz
