Title: Damaged alloy.
Post by: MarkA3 on 12 April 2017, 11:44:29
Afternoon all. Just a quick one to gauge opinions really. Last week hit a pot hole, Big Bang, flat tyre. Removed alloy and its dented with a good foot long crack on the inside edge.
So I've been reading on the internet of options and it all seems divided. Personally I'm not too sure a repair is the right thing to do. That said I can't find a replacement for lover nor money it's a shame because the irmscher 18"s supersports do look good on my estate elite.
Any thoughts or opinions welcome.

Yup, not many of those around now. I also would not be inclined to repair it, I'd be worried about the next hole splitting the fix.

I guess just keep an eye out on eBay for one going spare  :-\

A good quality TIG repair will be as good and as strong as the original.....its just ensuring its a good quality TIG repair!

Yeah, there aren't many people I'd trust to weld a wheel back together but as you say - stop drill the crack, grind out the affected area, in-fill with TIG and it'll be golden done properly.

And despite living in Bracknell for many years, I don't know anyone around there who does it :/

Is it worth having a go at the council for compo, seeing as you can't buy a matching replacement and will have to buy a set?  ::)  ;)

Very difficult to win, but worth a try.

Yea they don't play that game around here anymore, haven't done for years, which id bloody annoying as I reckon I must write off at least 3 wheels or Tyres a year through pot holes in Epping Forest.  >:(

Got nowhere trying to claim when Mrs TB shagged a 18" Sportstar and tyre.

Prestige fixed ours, but I work near their headquarters, not their useless agents.

I also repaired one cracked and slightly bent rim on the outer edge, was cracked maybe 4-5cm from the outer edge. Running fine even today.
Proper cleaning and TIG welding makes it a durable fix.

Thanks every one, very helpful. I'm loathed to admit that I may have to cut my losses. The damage is quite substantial and I'd be very concerned if it was repaired how safe it would be. So looking around I quite like the original alloys and have seen some very nice ones on eBay. Question is how much do we think my original three irmscher sport stars with 4mm of Pirelli winter rubber on are worth. Some obvious wear and tear but nothing drastic. I know it's kind of a "how long isa  piece of string" question, but give it a go.
Cheers
Mark

Might be interested if the price is right as I need an 18" spare.

Do you know what the ET of them is?

I appreciate that many members take great pride in running immaculate Omegas. I do not, all I seek is comfortable reliable transport. In my book, as long as the tyres are all legal and the same size, I am content that the wheels on each side of the car look the same. Left and right sides can have different wheels.

Wheels of a different offset, regardless of size is asking for trouble... 10mm difference in the position of the wheel might not sound much, but it will impact on how the car corners and follows the camber.

To be clear I am referring to having an odd wheel rather than a matching pair on one axle... Et41 front and Et30 on the rear would be perfectly acceptable, but one wheel at ET41 and three at ET 30 less so... Emergency only and with the caveat of 50mph/restricted mileage.
