Title: Intermittent starter motor issue
Post by: Hawkins2103 on 15 April 2017, 21:15:59
Hello, hopefully someone on here can point me in the right direction.

In the last few months something to do with starter motor/ ignition system has developed a fault that i can't get to the bottom of, on some occasions when i turn the key in the ignition the starter can be heard clicking as if the bendix is engaging but not actually spinning the engine over, it can take many tries before the engine finally turns over and fires up, other times it works perfectly on the first attempt.
The starter motor was replaced not many miles ago but still i thought this must be the fault however when i had it off the engine and on the bench it performed perfectly, just to confirm whether there was any problems with the unit i have had it checked by an expert who agreed the motor is absolutely fine and the fault lies somewhere else.
I've checked the battery connections and made sure all fuses and relays are properly seated but still not found any obvious problems,
hopefully someone on this forum can point me in the right direction, any help or suggestions are appreciated.
The car is a 3.2 auto, x police car if that makes any difference?

Thanks
Mike

I'd run Kevin's excellent battery/ alternator tests, as listed in the maintenance section. Low battery voltage can cause all sorts of odd issues. :y

I have the  same problem with mine now. It tends to not want to start when damp weather, so I guess this has to do whith the lubricating getting dry after so many years.
One guy at my local garage said it culd be bad grounding...

Did you solve this problem?

Did this on mine last year - nothing wrong with motor, the solenoid had gone bad and is an easy fix in itself. The issue is removing the starter to do the work, as access isn't easy (at least on a V6)
