Title: The "Other" election this year . . .
Post by: Mister Rog on 22 April 2017, 12:18:38

So, there is a presidential election in France this year.

So what ? What's that got to do with us ?

Well, there are a number of candidates and most of them would probably not make a big difference to us. However, If Ms Le Pen were to get elected there would likely be some fun and games in Euroland, and it could very well affect Brexit negotiations and the attitude of Brussels.

The link below is a run down of the candidates and their views. It's worth taking a look to get some idea of what's going on. At present Le Pen is No 2 in the polls, but as we know polls are so often wrong these days.

Yes, and the continual problem of terrorist action in France is helping the Right Wing. ;)

I wonder if the Russians know the result already? ;D

Sundays round isn't the main event. That is later ( May 7th?) when voting on the top two candidates takes place.

On the Uk news this morning they interviewed some Frenchies on the streets. One said "They   ought to get to grips with these terrorists" I guess he meant wave a magic wand  ;D ;D

The French will be fine, they are proud and don't give a flying frock about anything but being proud and French...

The Germans however, will be getting nervous :D

Just like we don't care about anything but being difficult and British.  ;)

Part of the rivalry between GB and Fr over many centuries stems from both being "difficult" and proud and nationalistic.  Anyone read the book "1,000 years of annoying the French" by Stephen Clarke ? Read, it is quite easy reading, very amusing, and very informative.

Indications are that Le Pen is through to the next stage, not 100% certain yet, but highly likely

Squeeky bum time in Brussels  ::)

Nothing to do with agreeing or not with her politics, but if she gets in it could be very beneficial to Britain  :-\

She won't get in. Everyone who voted for a candidate that didn't get through will now join the 'Anyone but Le Pen' camp.

If Marine Le Pen gets the top job the EU will be dead in the water.

Is France heading for the same sort of divisiveness we see in the Uk? I.e. Approx 50 percent happy formore EU and globalisation or  50 percent moreFrance.

So, Macron wins.

Turns out that his Mrs used to be his teacher and is 25 years his senior. He was seeing her while still at school. In most countries that would possibly be a career killer, in France it's a badge of honour !  ;D

Shame, I think Le Pen winning would have been similar to putting a very hungry and starved cat, locked in a room with lots of fat pigeons.  ;D

The real story of the French election should be that over a third of French voters spoiled their papers or left them blank.   :o

Of course the main stream media are so busy applauding Macron's victory over the extreme far right's Le Pen that they have conveniently overlooked this.  ::)

I can see the young President quickly running into trouble and soon being as unpopular is Hollande was after a short time in office.
The French economy is a basket case and he may not have a clue how to begin to put it right.
If Merkel stays in power, she will more than likely see him as a young fool who she can manipulate like her personal puppet.
It could all end in tears sooner rather then later.
Personally I couldn't give a toss. Its only France.  ;D

Normally I would agree to some extent, however I do think that a Le Pen victory would have been better for us in the Brexit negotiations. As she would possibly have embarked on a Frexit track, the EU may have needed to be less heavy handed, whereas Macron is likely to fully support the EU.

I fully agree with that. In fact if Le Pen had been elected it would probably have been the beginning of the end of the EU.
Her day may still come.
