Title: Secondary Air Injection

Noticed at the meets (and outside my house) that there are an awful lot of cars with noisy SAI pumps....

We dont seem to have a definitive guide on the why's and what's and how to properly disconnect.

Any knowledglable person fancy doing a how2?

bits im unsure of....

Is it ok to 'just' unplug the pump, or should some pipe blocking be done?
what are the consequences?  is it just emissions on startup?
how easy is it to put right, rather than bodge?

Practical aspects I'm not sure about as I don't have it but I'll have a go on the other points:

If I were disabling it I'd block the pipes into the exhaust manifolds and remove the whole lot to give me an easier time with cam belt changes, etc. Unplugging just the pump should be OK unless the one-way valve is knackered. I believe the ECU monitors the circuit driving the air valve so this needs to be retained or a suitable resistance substituted.

Yes. It's only there to warm up the cat after starting. ECU has no knowledge of whether this has happened so it won't get upset if it doesn't. MOT emissions, fuel economy, etc. will not be affected at all.

Ive blocked both pipes and disconnected the pump. It doesn't take long ;)

I've not even looked at it yet, but what are you using to block the pipes?

I reckon AA batteries would be about the right size  :-X

ive got a couple of spares off the scrapper, hoping one of em will suffice as replacement. in the meantime ive just unplugged the existing one. didn't block any pipes though. this won't cause me any problems will it?

removal and refit is a straightforward job, as i found out ripping them off the scrappers. three or four bolts and some elbow grease should do it. might need bumper off depending on irmscher kit etc.

I had a couple of large gearbox bolt knocking around so I used them, fitted a treat :)

What about a 15mm plumbing stop end? Should be about right size...

AA might not be too happy about that! ::) :D
