Anyone care to share their views on this model. 1997-2008? Supercharged?
I seem to have a hankering.

Engine is generally robust, has been in plenty of things and uses established (read ancient) technology. The 4.0 v8s had an issue with losing the Nikasil lining off the bores, and with timing chain tensioners. However this didn't affect 4.2's and iirc all R's are 4.2. Also, it's generally accepted that the ones that are still running will either have recon'd engines (usually under warranty) or the liners were good from the factory.
As for the car, papa '944 ran a 3.0v6 for years, (from 25k to around 140k) generally reliable thing, facelift cars (around 2002 and denoted by an electronic handbrake) are a significant improvement. Changes to electronics improved reliability and pre facelifts go through suspension components as consumables. Early ones did suffer rusty sills (under plastic covers), but not as badly as x-types. If I were buying one, I'd have the sill covers off first. As with a lot of Jags (past and present) random electrical problems are often caused by a battery that's still functioning but past its prime. Oh and check the battery, it's in the boot iirc and can rot out the floor if it leaks ::)
Generally they have a reputation for being a handful in the wet and fuel consumption is around 14-27 for the v8 depending on the weight of your right foot.

Ford era, not a true Jag I don't think. All other versions I would not be interested in one bit, but the supercharged lump could make it interesting.
However, I'd much prefer an XF-R :)

True, it's why most of them...um... worked ;D

Full Ford ownership was 1999 onwards, unlikely to be a lot of Ford influence on the designs at that stage (given car design is around a 5-7 year process), may well be some Ford parts.

Stand corrected... I thought it was some American/Ford hybrid. :-\

I thought the S type ran a Lincoln/Ford thunderbird running gear albeit modified
edit, yes it did https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jaguar_S-Type

Wasn't Elite Pete running a V8 S type?

That's a good sign :y he was never one to keep an Omega intact for any length of time ::)

I had a 3.0 V6 S type in for the day a few weeks back and was quite impressed with it,250 bhp so no slouch either :y
-
I ran one for almost a year without any issues did around 9000 miles averaged 22 mpg comfy and quick but can have a wayward back end in the wet only sold as my back is getting bad and I had trouble getting in and out :y
-
The ZF sourced 6 speed auto from around that era can be unreliable. Other than that, corrosion and niggly electrical faults are the biggest issues normally.

Thanks for your opinions/advice.

XF SV8 built from 2008 onward?
Same 4.2 supercharged lump. Pretty rare these cars. :y
-
Is that like an R but with softer suspension then?

The SV8 was the interim 'hot XF' model only built 2008/9........so pretty rare.
It was no slouch though with a 416 BHP 4.2 litre supercharged V8. :y
It was replaced by the frugal, nippy, and environmentally friendly XFR in 2009 :) with a 5.0 supercharged V8.
