Title: Cambelt kit
Post by: JamesV6CDX on 04 August 2008, 15:34:36
What are the views on cambelt kits for V6 -

Genuine all the way, or are the contitech's etc of this world alright? (I have a funny feeling they make them for VX anyway?)

Also, does anyone know what kit is needed for the 3.0 on a 2000 W or is the engine number needed?

I'd quite like to order one asap :y

Have fitted a few SKF ones recently and they're good. Sourced from Autovaux, IIRC. Markings on the belt (made by Gates) and SKF bearings.

Go for a gen part and yours is the same year and model as mine and that was an EB kit which cost just over £120.

Should have said the SKF ones I got worked out at about 100 quid delivered, IIRC.

On the two kits the vauxhall do there is a code on the main tensioner bracket and you should find either EB or 01 but you will find one of these and they differ in price by about £15 with the EB one being the cheaper one. :y

I know, I just didn't recall EB kits being used on later models.  ::)

So when did they stop using the EB one then.

Can always swap the backplate if it is an 01.

My 98 is an EB.  Vaguely recall Tunnie's new one being EB, but I was nursing a real bad hangover that day, so could be wrong

Understand both Gates & Contitech supplied Vx as OEMs.
Both makers are well respected companies in the belt making field.
Recently bought 2 x Contitech kits for the Elites - £53 + VAT each vs £97 + VAT each on TC!!!!  Cheapest i could get Gates was around £70 + VAT each.
Have to say well packed, look top quality, all bearings SKF.  Kit complete incl replacement bolts.  Ordered late Sun night, arrived early following Tues morning.

Late cars (about 97.5-98ish onwards) are 01, early are EB.

And yes, I really rate the contitech kits, they are the same bearings and backing plates as Vx with a good belt to!

The Gates kit I have also has SKF bearings - so seem to be a common factor.

With all my vauxhall's i have put gen parts on and i think you will find if you buy a vauxhall belt kit and have a garage fit it then if it snaps vauxhall will not only replace the kit they will also pay to to fix your car which i am not sure after market kit companys will do.

Not usually belt that breaks.  Both Gates & Contitech are OEM suppliers so belt quality + rest of kit quality same as supplied by VX.  Why pay £149 + VAT (£97 + VAT TC) when you can get the same for £53 + VAT?

Sadly not these days, although they will fit a replacement belt for you!

That tends to sudgest that it might not have been the original engine....how high was the right sided idle roller, close to the oil pump or half way between pump and cam 4?

i can't remember to be honest it has been a little while since i last looked at it.

I remember it being the early one as when we did it the first time we were sent the wrong one by vaux and they were a little perplexed by it

Again, it points at an 'oddity'......possibly an early lump in a later car....
