finally had a code reading . result egr insufficient air flow . I strongly imagine the intake to be badly choked up. I am having it seen to to on Wednesday also may be going for egr blanking + remap. not made my mind up yet.

Just get intake cleared up for now...
-
Agreed, get the intake cleaned up, make sure the swirl flaps are still attached and go from there.
How many miles has this car done?
-
Yes, get it all cleaned up first. If the EGR won't close properly it presents extra problems should you go for a delete. BTW a good quality remap and EGR delete will transform the way the DTI runs. Well worth it.

update on egr fault. I have had the intake manifold cleaned & as regards blanking the egr it was tried for some reason it didn't work so was never blanked. I drove the hour it took me to get home M1, A1 & A64 with no problems. after a short while drove it about 1/2mile to put a x on a piece of paper then a further 2mils to do other stuff. on my way home I had to stop in traffic & after a few moments of being stationary the eml appeared, as soon as the car was mobile it went off.

did you actually see them clean the intake? Do you trust the garage to actually do it?

I usually would 100% say yes. just have been out to have a look to see if there is any clues. the fuel pipes from pump to injectors do not look like they have been touched. once when I did my own intake manifold I had to slacken them at the pump & take them off completely from injectors removing No1 altogether before I could take off intake manifold 2,3,4 pipes would twist round out of the way. so now don't think so.

So what did they do? Polish the outside of the intake?
