No, but it makes buying a banger for a few hundred tempting just to scrap it and cash in on the extra...

Considerering the resale Value of my GLS I might consider it.

Well that IS more than some peoples cars are 'worth' (depending on your point of view)

So will probably be enough to tempt a lot of people.

It would have to be monitored if they did.

people would just be going out and buying cheap gas guzzlers to reap the benefits.

Would not scrap my Omega for £2k as old as it is, it does 4000 miles a year, the emissions from building a new car would be far greater.
So I am being really enviromentally friendly and keeping my car as long as possible, it is the green thing to do.

Mike

Oh yes, how are they going to fund this one then ?

The market would soon adapt to that.

no I think it is a bad idea, the government want to get us out of these gas guzzlers but they want us to buy new cars.
How do they propose we do that? People don't want to borow money currently because maybe they can't afford to, so they stick with what they have

 ;D :D :o

When will this lunacy stop? ;D

Still, ought to reverse the decline in 2nd hand prices a little perhaps?

Problem is, no-one will break cars for spares any more because you can bet there'll be a catch that says you can't just take them off the road to support other "gas guzzlers" but you have to crush them complete. :'(

Lack of 2nd hand spares will be the death of the gas guzzler, not dedicated enthusiasts chopping them in for a bit of beer money.

I wonder if you have to buy a Pious or something to replace it - or whether you can just buy another gas guzzler to cash in next week?  ;D

This could be the real test of the government's motives. My prediction is that they won't like the idea of losing all that road tax and petrol revenue and we'll hear no more about it.

they haven't a clue (not a rather clue... in the words of one gas guzzler driver..)

..we'll probably get the subsidised bicycle when it comes to it.

don't forget that even if your car is nominally worth less than £1000, you are still going to have to buy something to replace it with.

Never a truer thing said all us lot that keep older cars on the road should be applauded and rewarded by the government for doing our bit in limiting emissions, not punished  >:(

I've come to the conclusion that global warming is caused by alll the hot air being expended in Whitehall and Brussles.
Get rid of that lot and all our problems will go away ;)

Bet you any money the "grand" comes in the form of a discount voucher for a bloody lime green toyota prius, or some other steaming pile of cack.
If they just gave you the bucks, whats to stop you scrapping a 2.5 & spending a grand on a 3.0.

yup-mines worth less than 500.
as someone has already said, you could make a living out of buying them and scrapping them.
they currently pay illegal immigrants a similar amount to go home apparently, and from what i,ve read they are soon on a plane back here to repeat the process -if you cant beat ,em - join ,em. ;) ;D

ironically, even the worst 2nd hand gas guzzler is more environmentally friendly than a new car - especially the Toyota Pious - the energy used in making these outweighs the energy in an equivalent non-hybrid and you wouldnt even USE this energy buying a car thats been made 10yrs ago. and dont get me started on the damage the smelter they use to produce the batteries causes to the environment

typical politicians - didnt want to know about the environment until its too late - now they can't wait to be seen to be green without even looking at the problem with a modicum of intelligence...I know - lets use BIOFUEL!!! instead of feeding the world's hungry - lets use these crops to fuel cars and make some Americans in SUV's feel a little bit better about themselves!!!

... Except France is where this crazy idea originated, and it's already happening there...

 :(

Still, once all their decent cars are scrapped (won't take long) there'll be even more fun to be had dispatching their shopping trolleys on all the 2 mile straights on their "D" roads.  :y
