Title: Has/have most people abandoned the omegas and moved onto newer things?
Post by: ngrainqey on 28 June 2017, 14:46:30
As per title,

A lot of posts from forum members I remember as being on here around the same time as me have quite often got ex member or guest next to their usernames?

Have most people on here gotten rid of the omegas? I bought an estate the other day in not bad condition (arches) as the bodywork is what usually lets them down, just as a runabout but if most of them are going to the scrapyard etc I'm half tempted to keep this one.

Wierdly, I ended up following another omega in a similar colour and similar spec - although saloon instead pretty much the day after I picked this one up!

After 12 years, I let my 2.2 go, moved on from that.

I have the 3.2 left, but I suspect it's ownership with us will come to an end in the near future.

Had my 2.6 for five years a really good car but bought the Merc on impulse no regrets on either one if I had a double garage I think I would have kept the 2.6  went to a member on here who sold it to a friend , now no trace on the DVLA site of AK 51 ONV shame if it has been written off or scrapped.

I recently got rid of mine when I discovered the sills were rotten.  Can't complain though I had it for nearly 11 years and it had 245,000 on the clock, so it didn't owe me anything!  :y

I am very pleased indeed with my current Omega, its a peach of a car, but it will definitely be my last one. Probably my last Vauxhall too after 40 years of (mostly) driving them. Its a shame, but they only make shite cars now so its inevitable.

I had my MV6 for five years and put 30k on it and it never let me down though the suspension was a yearly thing to maintain and the most annoying part of it`s ownership. I still really liked it though but rust was starting to rear it`s ugly head on the front chassis legs and the ABS ECU packed up so it was time to move on, and for the first time since 1997 I am now without a Vauxhall and the first time with a rice burner  :y

Still have mine , fifteen years now and counting.
Not a bit of rust or a mark on it anywhere at 125K miles . Would never consider getting rid of it as it transports me in great comfort but the Insurance industry in this stupid little country is basically condeming cars over fifteen years old by refusing to insure them either flatly or by quoting prohibitive rates couple this with a road tax of €710 per year makes no economic sense.A perfect car may be commited to scrap next year just because of the greed and indifference of politicians and an out of control Insurance industry.

I think, to hold an old Omega is a challenge. Do it if you like it, otherwise take a credit and by something new.

My Omegas are getting better every year and I can say, I know every I rust hole under every dammed plastic shield. Over the last two years I did hardcore welding, because I like my Omegas. I like to drive them and I like their old fashion design (specially PFL).

So there is no reason to give them away.

It is so simple  8)

Its a pity i'm no good at welding (despite having 3 welders) because then I could repair my avengers as well as any omegas that come my way.

Hi Olympia

That is a shame! I can insurance an Omega like every other car to fixed conditions. Both of my
Omegas are labeled green, so the tax is low and I am allowed to drive in any inner city zone. My boss has an unlabeled Audi A6 TDI, ten years younger than my Omega. He is not allowed to use his car in Freiburg or Stuttgart. If he must drive there, he has to borrow my old Omega  ;D

Can you export your Minister for Transport over to us before Brexit, so we can all have our Omegas labelled green too ?  :y ;D

Still got (a broken) TBE here though.

Gave up on Omegas about four years ago. Miss the comfort , towing ability.

Dont miss the filling up every time I left home.

Got a four by four. Great on the farm and in the countryside. Need something comfortable and bigger. Real problem deciding what. I even chased a lhd omega estate....

Hi Migv6

I see it the other way. Any UK Omega (except some diesel models) re - imported to Germany will be labeled green. If the bloody stearing where on the right (left) side, I would have imported Omegas from the UK. Our prices are low, UK prices are suborbital.

Hi Neil

Welding on an an Omega is not only a question of "how to do". It is also a question of time. Proper welding on a normal PFL needs 2-3 month (hobby work, after work). So you need minimum a second Omega for driving. Therefore I have two Omegas.

I think members leave for many and varied reasons not just because they've got rid of their Omegas[you don't have to own one to be on here]as/when I get rid of the Elite I'll replace it with something the same age or older, newer cars are too full of stuff I don't want/need/have no interest in to go that route.Even Omegaless I reckon I'll stay on here as I like this forum a lot :y

I had mine about 3yrs, very reliable for the 40-50k I did in it.  Then I palmed it off onto my parents, great car which I will miss. Problem is it just doesn't suit my new 750-mile-plus-a-week lifestyle. I could have gone down the lpg route, but I couldn't see me being arsed with filling it up every verse end.

Will I ever have another? Maybe if we take on another house renovation project. They are pretty much unparalleled when it comes to moving big piles of cr@p from one place to another. Chances are it would be one of these or an old Volvo estate (940 or something). Otherwise I doubt it, tbh I doubt any future daily driver I buy will run on anything other than electricity  :-X

My Omega was lonely and sad. Face to face to the wreaker. So he decided to came to us. Sure he heard in the Opel scene that I
can  do something impossible. And I did....

Now my Caravan is part of the family...

I'm afraid that system would be too complex for the small world politicians that run this unsophisticated little country.
A 2 litre car ( even a smokey old diesel )  that was registered after mid 2008 costs circa €280 per year to tax ,as I said a 2 litre registered before that costs € 710 .This was due to a pact agreed between the unstable and corrupt government of the day and the GREENS  >:(  ,but that's the way Irish tribal politics works " let's not care about who gets hurt in our agreement ,just as long as we can stay in power ...."
In simple terms if you can afford a new car you pay little road tax ,if you cannot ,or choose to run a 9 year old plus car ,you get raped until that car turns 30 years old and you then pay €56 per year .
As for insurance , every driver is getting a minimum of 50% to as much as 100% plus  rise in their premiums per year and not one single politician is even interested in the hardship it is causing .
A sample ,http://www.backroads.ie/forums/showthread.php?21821-Motor-insurance-gone-to-hell-2017
 Yep , a simple little country .

I own two 2.5 V6 Omega Elite's and both get regular use.:D

Both are pre-face lift. One is a R registration (1997) and the other is a T registration (1999). Apart from the usual Elite specification both unusually came with the optional "Philips" sat nav system. They were good for their day but obviously pretty much obsolete. (but still work)

I have had the T reg  from new in 1999 (a company car) and then bought it from the company three years later.

The second one was bought with  low miles and full VX service history in 2000.

I now do all my own servicing and I am lucky I can access the VX Trade Club and Halfords Trade Card schemes which dramatically keeps the running costs down.

I regularly log into this forum and enjoy the various threads and regularly refer to the excellent maintenance guides. However, I must admit I don't contribute much in the way of chat etc. It's just not the sort of thing I get involved in or have time for.

Keep up the good work. Carfix

I had 4 Omegas, gave the last one up about a year ago, I don't do my own work, so it was getting stupidly expensive.

I now have a Volvo XC70, which is a bit dull but does the job really very well. I stay here just to piss off STEMO and a few others.

Current Omega will probably be my last as well. Just can't face another round of suspension, grinding, welding and spraying. Once I accepted it's like returning to the world of classic car ownership but without the regular tweaks to carbs, timing, endless greasing of joints, but with all the bodywork maintenance then I can still live with it.

Just recently got rid of mine after owning 2 for the past 7 years. A major factor was cost of running it compared to my insignia. Insurance cheaper, more economical on fuel and cheaper tax band to.
Would have loved to have kept it but finances dictated otherwise

Sold my 3.2 Omega Elite Estate after 10 years of ownership, being my 2nd Omega and lost count of how many Vauxhalls, bought a Mercedes E Class Estate, and I'm afraid to say the Mercedes is far better in every aspect.

Second one for me, rear wheelers are better to drive
I will run this one into the ground or untill I can no longer afford to fix it which ever comes first

One thing I have noticed is no one can park big cars anymore,  and there is definatly an increase in pocket rockets and they still take up one and a half spaces

My Omega is looking very sorry for itself stuck on my drive and not driven since my eyesight problems started but did drive a Renault clit soot burner on very quiet roads in Ukraine and found my eyesight adequate for driving and will be okay with bifocal glasses, slight distance correction glasses for the roads and reading glasses for seeing the instruments clearly, so I will now have to think about getting the glasses and get the Omega back on the road. :y :y :y

Just been through all the responses and lol r.e stemo

P.S Tunnie post your omega up on here when you decide to sell it

and in response to TB scrapping THE MV6, I hope you didnt let the wheels go with the car! lol
The later elite wheels are hard enough to find, never mind the MV6 ones!

We went all electric with a pair of Leaf's and much as I thought we would still use the Omega's so far the only time has been when I needed a tow bar so I suspect their days are numbered.
