As a family we have owned Omega 2.5/2.6 estates for at least ten years. The current one is virtually dead and I'm thinking about a 2.2 diesel replacement. I know they are much coarser (driven one) but they seem to be cheaper to run and maintain. It will be used a load lugger for fishing tackle, university kit and garden waste in the main.
Specifically I'm concerned about determining the cam chain change intervals. I have read sections of the forum but cannot find anything related to diesels. Does the chain need replacing regularly? Or is it the tensioner and associated parts only necessary?
-
Unlike belts, no regular intervals. To be honest it will last the life of the car, just ensure you change the oil regularly.
Remember they are manual only and oil pump failure tends to write them off.
Like all second hand Omegas now many are very rough body wise and interior, so finding a good example will be a challenge.

You mean fuel pump.
The VP44 setup does not have a lift pump and the issues may be potentially worsened by the fact its a serial fuel system (it travels tank to filter to pump then back to the tank), that said the main issue is people (including the pros) who don't understand the setup!. If you get a failing leak off pipe or similar the fuel will run back to the tank when its stood making starting difficult or impossible (they do not self prime)....keep trying and it will knacker the pump.
easily sorted with the inclusion of a priming bulb with built in one way valve (and I notice they now do them with the connector on that fit directly to the fuel filter)
Otherwise no major issues with them.

Front pulley ages, and seperates. Possibly combination of age and miles (and spilt oils etc on the rubber part)

Front pulley does 100-120K normally. Don't replace with a cheap solid one as the engine will shake it to bits (literally). Fuel pump not an issue if it's not allowed to run dry. Leak off pipes tend to be the thing that crack and fail but are simple to fix.
Engine, gearbox, back axle bomb proof if properly maintained, 200K + no problem. Oil changes every 5K with good quality oil helps.
Engine runs much more smoothly with a good remap. I can get mine down to 32mph in 5th now without any vibration.
39-45 mpg real world use.
But, it's an Omega so the same issues that blight any other model, except cam cover gaskets, leaking oil coolers, cam belts and failing coil packs will affect a DTi as well.
Buy on condition and the quality of prior maintenance.

Sorry yes :-[
I typed fuel, then thought no that's in the boot it must be oil pump. :D

all issues mentioned in previous post I have experienced. tomorrow mine is having the intake manifolds removed & cleaned ,a new fuel filter & a primer ball fitted. my last one had a primer fitted inline adjacent to the driver door along the inner sill ( pre filter ) & another fitted post filter. also I recently had to fit a new pulley to present vehicle , mine did separate 3 days after a m.o.t . agree a remap seemed to me to be beneficial, in my experience it was. still would prefer the 2.5 with the bmw lump . after a fuel filter change did always start at the first turn of key.

have you a link to where I may get a priming bulb that will connect direct to filter
