It's the fourth of July, American independence day
-
Yes that reminds me it is time we took them back under our wing. We could then address a few problems like language, gun control, car design.
-
Oh, those ungrateful, rebellious colonials; I see.....
Ron.
-
The original Brexit wasn't American independence, but Henry VIII's break with Rome in 1534 which ended the jurisdiction of the Pope and the Papal authorities in England, making the country an independent sovereign nation! :y
Sound familiar? :)

This thread prompted a thought or two: given my appalling ignorance of history, this may not make any more sense than I usually do, but I got to thinking about our other breakaway situation, Northern and Southern Ireland. I never really understood the problem there, but I assume that it's to do with religion?
Since religion is a man-made fiction, why on earth don't they forget about any artificial difference and unite to enjoy what is a beautiful country?
Would I make a good international statesman, solving that problem at a stroke? :y 8)

America, the best Country in the World in every respect, because their Americans, God Bless them. You know they did screw up though, they forgot to call their Language, which is English, American. ::)
-
I THINK it was Churchill who said that we are two great nations separated by a common language?
The think is, WE know the difference between and adjective and an adverb, and use them correctly! :y
Ron.

Oh yes, and also we only ever use "gotten" in the phrase ill-gotten gains; otherwise it is simply "got" - got it? ::)

'gotten' was the past-participle of 'get' in old-fashioned English; it's still OK to use, it just sounds a bit odd to most English. Unlike 'forgotten'. Who said English was logical? ;D

Americanizms, ::), are oft mistaken as bastardisations of the Queens English, yet the reality is they use a version far truer to the original than the one whatt we use :D

Yep Opti, another example, and what a perfectly logical way of spelling that word; "centre" indeed! who came up with that? ::) ::) ;)
-
Oh dear. All keep bulling it up and we will all be speaking American English! :o
The Portuguese have a similar huge problem. Brazil speaks a version of Portuguese and there are a lot of them! They produce soaps which inevitably get shown in Portugal and the folk there have started speaking Brazilian Portuguese.
That reminds me I must get the paintwork sorted on my cars hood and fender ;D
