Title: Cramp
Post by: Lincs Robert on 10 July 2017, 20:51:26
Does anyone here suffer? I've had it on and off for years.

Just recently, last six months or so, the incidence has been increasing. It's always when I'm in bed & usually has me hopping around the room in agony.

Just wondering if any follow sufferers had any patent remedy/prevention ideas.

Thanks - Rob

I used to get it when I was younger, but now do not. Strange ;)

I have only just recently started to suffer - also in bed - and if bloody hurts!
If you ever find a cure, do please let me know; all I do is stand up, rub my calf, and hope it goes away soon.....

I remember reading it can be caused by lack of salt or dehydration ? Not sure if that's true.  :-\
I also used to suffer when I was younger, but it rarely happens now.

That's a possibility, Albs: I've been on diuretics for over a year now to help with an oedema problem, so they do drain water away - yet the cramps are quite recent.
It may be lack of sex with hot totty? I'll see if the NHS can oblige..... :y 8)

Quinine in very small doses is reported to help, so a couple of G & T's (provided the tonic actually contains quinine)  may make things easier ... worth a try at least .. :)

IMHO ....  Fever-tree tonic with Hendricks Gin, a slice of cucumber and two lumps of ice taken at 30 minute intervals works amazingly well .. I've not had cramps for years .. :)

After enough gin, you won't care whether you have cramp or not! ;D

Before you get into bed stand with one leg bent, straighten the other leg slightly behind you, foot flat on the floor, and stretch the calf muscle for about 10secs. Rest that leg for about 10secs then repeat using other leg.

Tip given to me by a Physio, works for me, no longer get cramp.

Sometimes get leg cramp but not that often and it's just a case of rubbing them until it goes away. What I do get very regularly[probably due to work]is hand cramp,my fingers curl into varying positions and my hand "hooks"at the wrist. This is painful while it's actually happening but once they're "set" there's no pain and after a few minutes everything eases and it's back to normal.

As Entwood said, Tonic water. A friend had it prescribed for cramp and drank a large bottle per day. :y

The trouble with tonic water, for me, is that I have diabetes and it is inimicable to my condition, even though I like the taste. Pity.  :(

When I worked in a drug detox unit leg cramps were a major symptom of Heroin Withdrawal and as mentioned earlier we prescribed Quinine with very good effect, your GP should be able to prescribe it as it was a Malerial treatment.  I think it was a build up of lactic acid in the muscles that caused it

Lactic acid? As in milk? I don't drink a lot of that and obviously I have never been on Heroin or any drugs. Well, maybe caffeine; I can't do without my coffee!

My Dad used to have a big magnet wrapped up in a sock which he kept in bed next to his crampy leg , he swore by it !

Thanks for the feedback guys - much appreciated.

I've also read that magnesium supplements can help - so am trying that as well. If no improvement from that & the tonic water I might visit the doc. It's the same muscle (calf) that I had the DVT in 7 months ago - but am pretty sure that's coincidence as I had cramps in that leg on & off way before the DVT incident.

I got cramp while pedaling my bike once, nearly flipped over the bars as my calf basically froze and locked in straight position :)

Unfortunately, I suffer from cramp, especially in the summer months. Lower calf cramps occasionally, but foot cramp regularly, most often, but not exclusively in bed. I can no longer go swimming as foot cramp kicks in very quickly. The same applies when climbing ladders, Once I get foot cramp it is very difficult to get rid of as soon as you stop stretching the muscles & tendons, it returns and locks up my foot (& at times feet) again. :( :( :( This at times can go on for an hour or more. :( :( :(

I just put up with it as one of those things, but any solutions that would help greatly appreciated? :y :y :y

Mentioned at local surgery and all I've had to date from doctors and nurses is rolled eyes that make G20 Merkel look like an amateur! >:( >:( >:(

That's an appallingly dismissive attitude on the part of your healthcare professionals, Rods. I have an appointment with my GP later this morning, so I'll ask him about it.

I get foot cramp now and again and it's a bugger to get rid of as you can't stretch your foot out enough, so I end up in a painful battle to stop the muscles turning my foot into a claw!  :(

That's the one  :y ;D

Just for once, I wasn't taking the piss with the banana comment   ;)
They contain potassium and other stuff which will help cramps  :y

Hmm . . . . .

I don't get cramp. I wonder if my prolific red wine consumption has anything to do with it. I'd like to think so  ::)

Maybe that's my problem. I've been told to limit my potassium intake due to my kidney issue - so stopped eating bananas about 6 months ago. It's now happening every other night 🤔

No eye-rolling, aaron, just good advice.
For mild/moderate attacks, drink tonic water (for the quinine content) at bed time and if really serious attacks he will prescribe quinine tablets - reluctantly, because I have diabetes and too much quinine is contra-indicated.
That also rules out bananas for me because of their high sugar content.

Suffered it most of my life, allways gets worse when it's cold weather.

Quinine bisulphate  from Docs and allways keep a bottle of Indian Tonic water handy as most members have mentions.

Went to hospital for an examintion and could'nt settle because of massive craps, Girlfriend went to hospital shop for a bottle of Tonic water, after a couple of mouthfulls the cramps had gone comepletely before a nurse had got back to me with some Quinine tablets. :y :y
