Title: Got back an old turntable
Post by: Zirfeld on 12 July 2017, 22:14:22
Last week I got back an old turntable. Nothing normal, very special. I did the construction 15 years ago and I produced 53 units, mainly sold in Far East. Japan, South Korea.

I am very glad to have one back. It is one of two painted in Porsche Seal Grey. All others are painted blue. So the turntable was called "Baby Blue". Tonearm is a Clearaudio unify, no cartridge. But I have some van den Huls...

Condition is very poor. Needs restoration. But Baby Blue is home again.

Picture shows another special version.  Tonearm SME V. Cartridge van den Hul Gold Frog. Platter brass made (9kg) gold plated. Painted in Lapislazuli Blue. High End Power supply. Only one build. Actual owner is a collector in Frankfurt.

I'll never forgive the music industry for stopping vinyl all those years ago and making me buy CDs, and now telling me that I should be buying vinyl again  >:(     ;)

I've just resurected my old 1980s system, not used for 20 years, just stuck in the garage. I did get a new deck though. Nothing like yours, just a cheapo. I don't buy new vinyl, I just want to listen to my old ones.

A programmer I used to employ now runs a collectibles shop that is doing very well out of vinyl album sales. :y :y :y

My (cheapish) record decks and Shure cartridges have been in the attic for many years and I don't plan to resurrect them. ::) ::) ::) CD's rule as I have no intention of monthly leasing my music. :-[ :-[ :-[

Turntable & vinyl popularity & prices are rising rapidly in the UK. :y

Lord Sitterpong & STEMO are busy pricing their wax cylinders, 78's and HMV turntables collections as we speak. :P :P :P

Lord Sitterpong is trying to re-install back his hard-of-hearing HMV horn back to his Gramophone. He needs the laptop funds, apparently. :P :P :P

Yep, a mate of mine is a hi-fi dealer and can't shift enough vinyl related stuff, including selling godawful Dansette type machines to hipsters. I can understand the desire for decent quality stuff but there's no excuse for that, or for the nasty plastic Steepletone sh1te that the supermarkets sell along with the overpriced 180g "audiophile" pressings.

However, I have a Technics SL1210 with typically either a Benz MC cart or a Shure M91 on it. I quite like perusing the charity shops for records and often the mastering is better than a lot of the stuff re-released on CD. A record cleaner is vital if you go down this road. Although I'm under no illusions that the quality achievable on vinyl is anywhere near that possible from CD, they are only as good as the original mastering which is often terrible these days.

Although I buy a lot of music on CD it gets ripped and stored on a server and then the CD is never touched again unless I get the urge to chuck it into my CCR2006. ;)

Same here, I still buy CDs, rip them. I like having the physical thing

Although now Omegaless, I still have a couple of CCR2006s sitting in the garage with one or two CDs stuck in them. One day I'll get around to removing them, possibly with a big hammer  ::)

How I guess I would actually look, and how I imagine you all now :P

I particularly like the first, and of course the Batman one is spot on

But we met once, and I thought you were the spitting image of Henry Rollins . . . . . .

Ahhh memories of youth. The beauty of the Dansettes was their portability to parties! :y

.. along with a box of records. Did you have to make a separate trip with the booze? ;)

These days, the youth just take their phone. ::)

Hmmm I have one of these lurking in the attic.  Maybe I should dig it out, give it a wipe over and stick it on ebay!   ::)

If I had a hipster beard I'd be thoughtfully stroking it now.  ;D

My Bang & Olufsen turntable. amp/ tuner and speakers survived several house moves. About 10 years ago I had a moment of madness, decided it would never get used again, and chucked the lot in a skip.
What a dick.  :'( ::)

Arghhhhh . . . . . .  :o

However, at one stage during a move I did have similar thoughts about my old kit that included an Arcam amp

I inherited a nice B&O (well, 'nice' by my standards) many years ago - probably 1970s or 1960s vintage.. when I left home my parents binned it :'(

Ah well. I pretty much just listen to Spotify or the radio (DAB in the Skoda) these days anyway.

*awaits incoming barrage of abuse* ;D ;D

Oh...so many analogys here!

Take a look on the strangest project I ever did!

(https://s2.postimg.org/e4k4yogbd/rkpres_2.jpg) (https://postimg.org/image/pto4mn79x/)

That once was a Thorens Prestige. I restored it into mint condition.

It was the last Prestige that left Lahr many years after end of production.
