Mate has an E39 530d on a T. Its done a hugely impressive 311,000 miles.
Hes now concerned at the amount of black smoke coming out of the exhaust when driving with gusto.
Once I finished telling him that its a diesel and they all do that, I changed air filter and oil separator. Its still sootier than a small bear on a mans hand... Is it just going to be due to mileage and thus wear or should I be digging deeper? :y

Tell him that all diesel cars are the work of Satan. :)

A few years ago I drove a 530D manual with over 630.000 km on the clock. De-cat but just a decent amount of smoke out of the tailpipe. My 2 cents say that there is something wrong with it.
Turbo/wastegate/injectors/temp sensor/MAF?
Sound like it runs rich, a lack of boost or one of the mentioned sensors beeing defective would explain it but you should definetely feel a difference in the way it pulls compared with a good one. The 3.0 D is a locomotive engine, when it runs well... It RUNS.

Disconnect the maf and see if it improves things,it'll run better with none than a duff one.

Most likely a clogged and gummed up inlet manifold

You like cleaning them up, don't you? Very therapeutic, I believe ;D

If its had servicing at the silly intervals suggested by manufacturer, the wear might be high by now.
