They have form for this I think.

Pretty sure they wrote 777 across the USA when they released the ER version of that. Still impressive though. Shame they're not a patch on the A380 from a passenger POV, much noisier and with less space.

It's just a shame that the 380 is so damn ugly... the 747-8 still looks very much like a jumbo jet and is far more graceful than the Airbus ever could be :-\

For its size, the A380's engines are impressibly quiet from the outside. :y :y I don't know about the inside? ??? ???

The new generation engines are considerably quieter compared to the older stuff. Taxiing, the A320 NEO sounds about a third quieter than even a year old one... similarly the difference between the 787 and the 757/767/777 is just as marked 8)

Come to Lasham and see a 727 takeoff if you want noise. :y

Or got to RAF Marham and see a Tornado which is loud, or in years to come the F-35 which is 'kin deafening.

Modern airliner engine design is no longer about maximum power - its about 50% fuel efficiency, and 50% low noise. Military engine design is all about power  ;D

The SQ A-380's are the best thing I've ever flown in, even in economy, but the 4-holer days are numbered. Even the USAF have decided they can't afford to buy new B747's for the Air Force One replacement. Instead they're going to convert second hand B747's from a cancelled Chinese order where the airline went bust whilst the planes were being built. It's unlikely any more passenger 747's will be ordered and the last US scheduled airline 747 flights will be in the next few months.

Of course BA and Virgin will soldier on using obsolete stuff for years yet  ::)

Agreed and if you've got to sit in a tin can for 15 hours and it's nice and comfortable, who gives a toss about what it looks like on the outside!  ;)

I've never taken any notice of the type of plane when booking a flight, but next time I book a long haul I'll definitely look out for airlines that use the A380 and will be prepared to pay a small premium for that.  :y

The Virgin 747 fleet will be gone from Gatwick by the end of the year :'( Presumably to be replaced by the older Airbuses from Heathrow as the Dreamliners get delivered :-\

The US aren't afraid of using older aircraft... variations of the 135 are rebuilt 707-100s, the latest incarnations being good for decades of service.

Well, true, but it's interesting to see how far airliners have come.

I did not realise there were any 727's flying in the UK, till this one came over the caravan site on approach to Bournemouth.
Oil Spill Response unit.

Yep, that oil spill response one practically lives there and there are quite a number on the ground there at the moment. Not sure if they are awaiting maintenance or the gas axe, TBH.

I got a look round one there that had been turned into a private jet for some sheikh. Very nice. Big lounge area with leather sofas and a big TV on the wall, chandeliers hanging from the ceiling so presumably negative "G" was discouraged. ;D It had a bathroom with hot tub, gold taps and the works. Bedroom with a 4 poster. Quite a comprehensive galley and a few rows of conventional seats in the back for the plebs!

Careful - it's as much about the airline as the plane. I'm told comfort on the BA, Qantas and Lufthansa A-380's isn't a patch on the SQ/EK ones.

Yes that's a fair point.  I flew to Bangkok last year with Emirates and the London/Dubai leg was operated by Qantas, who weren't a patch on Emirates!  :y

A BA flight has to be uber cheap these days for me to even consider them....  ::)

I was fortunate to be seconded for some months in 1981 to the Royal Flight in Abu Dhabi. They had three 707's, two freighters and the one I operated for Sheikh Zayed. Most of the internal fittings, handles, taps etc. were gold plated. It was also fitted with twin APU's (BA 707's had none!) Lovely airplane to operate. Internally it was sheer luxury. https://www.google.co.uk/search?biw=1152&bih=602&tbm=isch&sa=1&q=707+A6HPZ++&oq=707+A6HPZ++&gs_l=psy-ab.3...10919.10919.0.11107.1.1.0.0.0.0.52.52.1.1.0....0...1.1.64.psy-ab..0.0.0.r4rLGRFmyr8#imgrc=HChCObRj2dwyrM:

I won't be flying BA again. Their chief exec formally ran a Spanish budget carrier. And it shows. But their profits are up, so it appears that my view is in the minority.  ::)

For us, long haul going west it's Lufthansa and going east it's Emirates. Simples  :y Within Europe? I'll probably drive as the muts will be coming :). Once my airmiles with LH run out - I may reconsider.  ;D
