Title: Speed camera
Post by: plym ian on 06 August 2017, 17:36:32
Can you be done if it flashed as you drive towards it and there are no markings on the floor??

A Truvelo style speed camera will have you as you approach and that type doesn't require the lines on the road.
Guessing that's not what you wanted to hear though.   :-\

I pass an older style Truvelo every day as I enter the town where I live. It faces you as you enter the town and has a much dimmer (infra red) flash than a Gatso, obviously so as not to blind you. There are no markings on the road.
On the plus side, you can leave the town like a bat out of hell with no worries.   ::)

To the best of my knowledge and belief, the Truvelo is the only camera that is permitted to take photos of the front of the vehihle; others, such as Gatsos, for example, may not.
Isn't it about time we put this speed/safety issue to bed? We ALL know it is merely an additional method of revenue collecting.

Ron.

Gatso's can be set to flash approaching (front), receding (rear) or both. There is a knob inside them that sets the mode. However, I've never heard of an attempt to prosecute anyone for a forward facing Gatso. Also Gatso's always flash twice if they're going to have you. If they flash once - in either direction - it's usually because they're out of film or there is no camera in them.

I'd say you are safe/

My understanding is that Gatso cameras don't flash when they are not 'loaded' i.e. there is no camera in them, because the reflective lens containing the flash that is clearly visible when it is loaded, isn't there! When they are not loaded (no camera) the flash area (in the upper right corner) is black. When they are loaded with a camera, the flash area is silver.
Trouble is you can see whether it's loaded / live only in your review mirror when you've passed the camera when it might be too late, or on the approach in the opposite direction and remembering for next time you pass it. But equally, it could have been loaded with a camera in the intervening period.....

The dazzle thing clearly isn't a concern to the "safety" people looking after them, as many Gatsos are in the middle of the road, and can be configured to point either way...   ...so always a bright double flash in your face if somebody is coming a bit quick the other way.

Ah yes, very true. I'd overlooked that when I commented.  :y
