Title: What to do with Father's car .....

Ok, Father has decided to stop driving - it's for the best methinks as he is 88.

The issue is what to do with his car - a Meriva 1.8 Life which he has had from new. It's a 59 plate with 15k on the clock, with full history from the supplying dealer.

The Vx dealer he bought it from is itching to buy it back, but I'm tempted myself as the trade in value is less than £2k.

So, that's an average of less than 2k a year - in reality what could need doing other than give it some use?

What could it need at such low mileage over a period of years?


Four new tyres: I wouldn't even think about this, but just buy them.


Brake fluid change.


Coolant change.


Timing belt?


Then I would drive it and see if it needs any work.

Good buy? Clutch might not be so good.  Otherwise go for it.

My dad swapped his Fiesta fora new one today. He is over 90. We keep an eye on him.

I have to say that Dad was a pretty good driver - I'm not too worried about the clutch. Now, if was my step mums car that would be all together different - I don't see how a clutch can last only 10,000 miles in a Mazda 2! She doesn't drive the Meriva - too big!

At that mileage plus the fact you know the vehicle I think you would be silly not to keep it .

Agree with Tilbo.At least with this one you know where, when and how it's been driven and how well it's been looked after.If it suits your needs then get it got :y

Indeed yes it does. He had a Cavalier 2.0 for years, also from new, before that and was worried that the 1.8 wouldn't have as much go. Wrong! Firstly the Cavalier was an 8v and also an auto. I'm tempted I must say.
