Title: 35.3 mpg
Post by: Jay w on 06 August 2008, 22:09:58
started work on a new contract today, straight run up the M5 to bristol 103 miles.

Left at 7am, took a nice steady drive between 60 and 70, got into work with the MID reading 35.6mpg.
Drive home was a liitle more testing by the time i pulled up on the drive Mid was showing 35.3.
Filled up with LPG - averaged 27.5 mpg  :o for a 2.6 i thought this was good going.

Couple of things i would say here, driving like this required a lot of forward planning, and in someways feels like it is more difficult to drive that say 80 in the fast lane, you are constantly trying to gauge the approach rate of the car in front or is the car behind going to move out and block you in so you have to use the brakes.
this was also done using both cruise and me controlling the pedal, on the flats i would use cruise, downhill cruise woudld be set but i would accelerate so as to build a little speed up, in the hills i would contol the speed manually and cruise would come off.

I doubt i am going to beat that in a hurry, my style of driving doesn't lend itself to economy  ;)

i have to say it is incredibly quite though, at one point this morning i turned the stereo off and all i could hear was the tyre noise, no engine note at all

So -- you drove 10 - 20 mph slower than normal --- out of interest what did that add, time wise to the trip ?

Your 206 mile round trip is about what I average in a week. I put £30 of derv in , 23litres or as near to 5 gallons, so it roughly does 40mpg. With the much lower price of LPG it sounds like you are running a decent car for next to nowt. At the moment I am using an old Rover 600 and I know what I'd rather be driving. Still looking for a Mig.

Well, been driving carefuly this week about (65-68mph).

So far

7 off 50 mile trips (Nottingham to Coventry and back) and the mpg is currently 38....and the tank and range sudgest this is correct.

In fact, the range currently shows 238miles left!

Which means 500 miles in a week, 10 journeys and I will still have some fuel left from a full tank!

The only time (other than when I'm running on fumes, and can't find petrol) I've ever driven economically ::)

Could be, if you're hoofing it.  Not managed a sustained run below 10mpg yet, managed a 9.something on my 15m 'test route' once in the MV6 ::)

Sh1t! down to 2 now? Reminds me of my mate's all-aggro. Ended up with 2nd and 5th. Wait until the valves bounce in 2nd then a very aggressive shift into 5th. :y

.. and that included reverse, so be careful where you park!

In an auto, thats all you need - it covers the huge majority of the speed range needed. Ideally 3rd is useful as well, as mine bangs off the rev limiter in 2nd at 85mph

That won't make any difference. Open a window, and it affects the aero dynamics, causing drag. Costs you the same in fuel as climate, but with less wind noise ;)

16mpg while towing on gas?

Get yoursef a derv, they do 30mpg towing...

500 miles a week out of my own pocket.......well, actually the company is paying for the first 4 weeks at 25p a mile.....and with the cash saved I can get rid of those crap Michelin over hard piles of shit tyres on the back....

......now THATS worth saving a few quid!

I save my fun for roundabouts and slip roads where people try to cut in........the rest is plain boring motorways and dual carridge ways.

Mine is mostly spent at 40mph - not the most economical speed for an auto - with a couple of short stretches of dual carriageway where I have to make up time ::)
