Title: vectra 2000 cambelt change.
Post by: Chazza12 on 14 August 2017, 17:28:35
Ive just rang up for a cambelt change on a vectra 2000 x18xe1 engine, They said it would be £400 even when i will supply the kit, does that sound about right ? I would do it myself but did not fancy doing it as the wheel has to come off and the engine mounts just to get to the belt etc. but is this about right for the price did not think it would cost that much. The vectra's probably only worth that price anyway.

1.8 Vectra C belt was £120 in labour and included swapping the water pump and thermostat... parts customer provided... total was circa £250 iirc

Engine is broadly similar, so cost should be comparable  :y

My car shares an engine with a Vectra but uses a chain and not a belt.

85000 miles with no problems. :)

its belt on this, its near to its end of life, timing out a bit according to timing marks, and asked when it was last changed and he cannot remember and he had it for 10 years. so it definitely needs a new belt and water pump fitting, water in engine is rust red. i will have to have a go at it sometime its not going anywhere till its done, its just trying to find the time to do it. have kit bought it from vx.

It happens... Some places are fussy about parts... Which is understandable as they need to be able to provide some sort of guarantee, both of their work and the parts.

That said, if you turned up with all the parts just collected from Vx with the receipt then you shouldn't have an issue :-\

Pay to shop around...

i bought the parts as they (all ) use uni parts and did not like the idea of them parts being fitted. suppose they ok for fords as a cheap fix, not with the timing belt. ive used them on fistas and most managed was 3 years and then the belt needed replacing. so no to uni parts.

Vx service parts are cheap enough :y

Just need to find someone to fit them...

Might be worth asking local Vx dealer for a fitting quote... They occasionally have fixed price offers on certain jobs such as coolant/brake fluid and cambelt changes :y

Even if they quote £250-300, you're still well ahead of the first quote :y

Fitting bits supplied is a pain in the head, more so when its something as critical as a timing belt. End of.

Incorrect, cheap, updates and Warranty issues.

Did i mention it being a pain ?

This.

The OP might be surprised if he gets a quote from the same garage to supply and fit the parts.
