Title: Dilema
Post by: Elite Pete on 07 August 2008, 12:43:52
I have the choice of two MX5s, One is a 1.8, 70,000 miles, 1996 UK car which is quite basic, silver, black cloth seats, no mot and needs minor work for the MOT. The other is an Eunos 1.8, 1994, 129,000 miles but is a nice light blue metallic, blue/black leather seats, aircon, electric window, chrome roll bar, and has 10 months MOT and 2 months Tax but its smoking on start up and its not valve stem oil seals because he's just had them done, so I think it would be easier to replace the engine. The UK car is £1100 and the Eunos is £1300, which one should I go for?

I'd go for the 70k one.

Mechanicals will be perfect at that mileage. Leather seats, aircon and electric windows are a choccy fireguard on that type of car anyway. It's a UK car so resale will be easier.

Only thing going for the other one is the colour, by the sounds of it.

The bad thing is, the Silver one was in the Autotrader last week for £725, I phoned up and the woman said I would have to phone back at 8pm as her husband was at work, when I called back it was sold, so ive now got to pay an extra £400 for the same car :(

So someone's made 400 quid and hasn't even got it through an MOT. >:(

Does look reasonable. Put some alloys on it and it'll look a little less basic. Is the hood in decent condition?

I'm intrigued that it's got ABS brakes. Mrs. KW's one hasn't, and it's a W reg Mk 2. Guess it was either an option or they dropped it. :-/

That's a bit more "blue" than I was thinking actually...

I think the seller should keep it. The registration number suits him - just insert an extra "A" - guess where?

What work needs doing on the silver one?

It has been standing for a while so I would say discs and pads, good service but I would do that to both of them, new exhaust and thats as much as I know.

That number plate must devalue the car surely ;D
Unless it was put on a beamer in which case there would be a queue of people bidding for it..

http://www.mx5parts.co.uk/ are OK for parts. Very quick and no quality problems so far.

I have a set of front disks and pads in the garage that I bought for Emma's car because I knew they were in a state, or so I thought. Took the wheels off and they are fine. It's my car that has the breaked brakes. :-[ ::)

Hi Pete. I'd have gone for the silver one. Good miles just needs a tinker & service parts so probably the best bet mate. Plenty of maintanance guides showing strong/weak points & plenty of specialized MX5 places around the country to help get you started.
As we know they're not everyone's cup of tea but i'll stand up & say i love 'em, bags of fun, tough as old boots, cheap to run & easy to work on. Not many toys but you've got the Elite for that, the MX is a toy & does'nt pretend to be anything else. Once again don't forget to unzip the rear window when you drop the hood.
        ENJOY, Guy. :y 8-)
