I'm after getting a pair of new tyres[no great rush at present as it's still not on the road]the tyres already on my car-F/L 3L Elite-are 205/45/ZR17 97W.According to Black Circles and two tyre suppliers I've spoken to the correct tyres are only 88W,whereas the handbook that comes with the car says the correct ones are 235/45/R1794W.So before I splash out on some El Cheapo ditchfinders what is the correct spec of tyre?

Your book manual is correct
-
To clarify further...
235/45/17
Load >93
Speed W, Y or Z

Muchly thanks for that TB :y

how does it handle with 205's ? :'( very bad, or just a bit bad ?

Dangerously shit I would imagine...

Never particularly noticed any great problems tbh but then I don't drive that fast these days or hoon it round corners. However now got proper size fitted[oddly enough the front were the correct size]Got a pair of Mazzinis on it now. They [at least]sound Italian-but more than likely Chinese-so they'll either be very fast or rust quickly ;D ;D

I would have thought it'd be improved. Probably be a good bit more feedback. It's getting back towards sensible tyre sizes rather than the largely cosmetic sizes the Omega runs as standard.
Having said that, you'd be in danger of looking like one of those "euro look" bell ends who run stretched tyres on their VWs, so I'm out. ;)

Not on a 7 1/2" wheel, 205 is around 8" to get the Euro look you would need a wheel 9" and above.

Fitted 205s to a previous Omega as an experiment, granted not a 3.2, but it improved turn in and the back end was no looser. IIRC in 1994, some Omegas were fitted with 195s. I inherited 235s on current Omega and it tramlines more, the steering is duller and heavier and, until I changed the rears for a decent make, the back end was definitely more lively than it should be.

I`m certainly not, but I don`t like over tyred wheels either, incidentally my chavved up Datsun wears 245 tyres on 9" wheels at the front, only 10mm more than an Omega yet the wheels are 37.5mm wider ;)Not on a 7 1/2" wheel, 205 is around 8" to get the Euro look you would need a wheel 9" and above.

I hate modern rim sets as all 4 rims are the same width so I cant put 205 up in front or something... So have to run 245s in all corners on both my cars...
-
The 1993 - 2003 Omega chassis is essentially identical to that of the 1986-1993 Senator/Carlton chassis that was originally designed to run with 205/65/15 tyres on the 6 cylinder versions.
Many UK Police spec Omegas were supplied with 205/65/15 tyres on steel wheels. My experience with these cars is that the steering, ride and handling on this spec is superior to the 235/45/17 retail spec (albeit with slightly less ultimate adhesion) and none of the tramlining etc you get with low profiles.
However, the look of the 15" steels is inferior....

Pre facelift 2.5 v6 cd omega's ran on 205/65/15 alloys as standard
