Turning it round ..... school once requested us to sign something for us to take responcibilty for our son at dinner time because he kept leaving the school ground to go to the local shops. HTF were we to do that from work? We placed him in the school's care in the morning ..... it was up to them to keep him there.

In plenty of schools now, esp academies, he would be excluded if he broke the contract. Then you'd have to trust he didn't run amok at home or take time off to watch over him.

Why did he keep leaving the school?  He must have known it was against the rules?  ???

I would often make a trip to the tobacconist during school time.

I was once caught in WH Smith when I should have been in a Chemistry lesson....   ...by my Chemistry teacher.  My attempts to suggest that she couldn't complain because she wasn't in the lesson either fell on deaf ears  :-[

Myself and a couple of mates was once caught in the pub at dinnertime by the headmaster, his deputy and the head of maths.
Me stating that they shouldn't have been in there too didn't go down to well either  ;D ;D

I would usually buy a packet of ten Players No6 and a book of matches.

If I was short of money (I was only 11 or 12 at the time) the ciggy man would split a pack and sell the fags individually. :y

If we wanted to leave school to go home for lunch - and for no other reason), we had to bring a letter from parents to that effect and of course had to live very close to the school.
As I lived six tube train stops away, I had no chance!
Rules were rigourously enforced, especially by up-themselves sixth form prefects who had the privilege of being allowed out at lunchtime.
If caught, we were severely punished, including a public caning at morning Assembly!  :'(

Ron.

Myself and some mates used to sneak down the pub sometimes.
We went to a pub we thought the teachers wouldn't be (bit run down) and always went in the public bar (if teachers had gone in there, they would have been in the lounge bar)
The landlord didn't care we were in school uniform as long as we had money in out pockets  ;D
