'Thousands' driving without crucial diesel filters

Its only like taking a cat out of a pre 92/93 car ;)

That’s naughty too. ;D

The fault lies with the manufacturers of DPFs; they need to make a device that is fit for purpose and will not clog up so readily - or at all!
Once again, the cost/blame has been passed on to the motorist..... >:(
Ron.

so theres nothing stopping me gutting the dpf and putting it back in situe making it look like its there

The DPF is a filter in the exhaust to that is supposed to be cleaned by increasing the supply of the chemicals that caused the particulates in the first place. Now, does that sound like something that an engineer would insist upon, or the idea of a politician who has no practical understanding?

From next year, you will find yourself with a very heavy fine, you naughty boy.
-
The problem can be overcome with the purchase of a petrol car.
It's what God himself would want. :)

By the car's emissions

My guess would be a roadside check, with some hairy=arsed plod sticking a probe up the car's bum?
Ron.

Read the last bit of the link I posted.

As there are virtually no plod on the road anymore they will find it very difficult to get a speed camera to do it ;D

When buying a car, how do you know if the DPF has been gutted or not? :-\
Not something Lord Opti needs to worry about of course, but for us mere mortals who like to get 40+ mpg. :)

It is fit for purpose (as I can confirm having stuck 194k miles on one with no issues)
The issue is those who insist on having a modern diesel for plodding about in.....there not up to that and cant be used for that. :y

It will smoke when booted (not massive amounts but will be visible), with a DPF they only smoke on regen

Until next year it could be tricky, other than the snide Mr Fuse points out. However it's not really much different to a knackered CAT in a petrol car. Wouldn't know about that until mr MOT man hands you a fail slip.
Potential recourse to the dealer I guess if purchased within 6months of the problem being identified. :-\

You don't. You get to play Russian roulette with your bum virginity ;)

The male bum is designed and should be for 'exit only'
The female rump however .......... ;)

I guess a visual inspection, see if the it's been buggered about with underneath. Can't exactly do that when viewing cars though!
-
That said with VAG you could do a plug in and insect the DPF's condition via software... as sure you can on others. But do need the specialist software to do it
-
I doubt many dealers would be happy if you turned up with your trolley jack, nor would they let you plug in your gizmo. ;)
-

Trouble is, most of the software mods frig that specific number to force the ECU to not regen :y

Great, so can't confirm that either. So it gives false readings for back pressure and soot? :-\
So i guess the only other way to look would be soot around the tail pipe, as DPF functioning should mean a diesel has a very clean tail pipe.

Boot it hard and look in the rear view mirror.
Saturation is calculated from back pressure and its the saturation that triggers a regen

I said we like to get 40+ mpg. :) Whether we achieve 40+ mpg is another matter! ;D
That said my trip computer on the Mondeo was showing an average 48 mpg the other day when I tried. :y

Even my Mrs achieves that, and she only drives short distances around town and has lead boots. Me thinks you know that though and are jesting. ;)

Your not trying hard enough....my 1.6 Mondeo is saying 50.summat :y

I'm sure if I can try over an entire tank, and bumblers keep out of my way, I can get below 30mpg (real, not the dreaming FC that Jag fit).
-
but for us mere mortals who like to get 40+ mpg. :)

I can manage that in a 2.0l Capri!
-
Now that my astra and I have become used to each other, the FC is showing around 45mpg. That’s not bad for poodling around town.
-
Over 50 on mine now since I serviced it, I suspect it may have had the wrong grade of oil in it previously. Can't think of what else it could be, wasn't that ganked up. :-\
Doing 75% of my miles on the motorway is helpful in getting the mpg up ;)
-
I set my self a challenge to see how high I could get the mpg, feathering the accelerator pedal to get it to change up at the earliest opportunity. Trouble is...I can’t stop doing it now. If I drive/accelerate normally, I still get 40+, but I’ve become a tree hugger :'(
-
I'm not entering the MPG competition. It wouldn't be fair on everyone else. :P ;D

20 miles to the CPF (chip pan full). ;D
-
Something like that. :y ;D
I actually had to pay for some today. 80 litres cost me £16. ;D
So 40mpg @20p per litre - equivalent to 240mpg. Its usually better than that though, as its usually free. :)
Omega has done 23.9mpg over the last 1000 miles.
Guess which car gets used most of the time ? ::)

I get 9.3, in the works vehicle, do I win the prize ;D

Its waste veg oil. This particular pizza restaurant changes it so regularily, its almost like new oil, so he wont give it away like most of them do.
I have a small local collection from a place which makes nothing but curry. The oil is bright orange and my cars exhaust smells like the extractor fan at the back of an Indian restaurant. ;D

Amazing!
Do you have to register/pay duty on using it? Not sure the d5 would appreciate it

Not sure the inland revenue have invented "Road Ghee Duty" yet, but rest assured it won't be long if word gets out. ;D
-
The regulations allow for up to 2500 litres per year of personal use before any duty is payable. A rolling 12 monthrecord of use needs to be kept for the unlikely event where someone asks to see it. ;)
Plenty of info here http://www.vegetableoildiesel.co.uk/mybbforum/index.php

I'm reading this whilst on the potty, "regening" last nights Lamb Naga.
To quote DTM, there is definitely a sting in the tail :'(

Perhaps you could post about opera, or the arts, whilst taking a dump in future. :)

Back to the thread ::). Coming back eastbound on A14 this afternoon, a 55 reg Passat estate joined from the slip road about 50yds in front of me. He accelerated away to get into the outside lane and an almighty black cloud of soot/smoke poured from the exhaust. Does this indicate that the DPF has been tampered with or removed? ???

55 plate won't have a DPF, introduced around 2008/9 ish.

Don’t think I said that, let me double check.
No, I didn’t.
