Title: Winter Tyres
Post by: Rods2 on 11 December 2017, 14:27:18
You know you've all been poised on the edge of your seats, keyboards at the ready, waiting for somebody to start one. ::) :o ;D

In Ukraine you feed the police slush funds get fined if you don't have winter tyres fitted from November to March which means along with a good snowplow network typical regular 1mm-500mm snowfall with occasional large 1m-2m snowfalls causing remarkably little disruption. You will go to work, teachers will go to school, school buses will run and children will be there except in very exceptional circumstance. Only time I've known it to be a problem for one day was 2m of snow overnight with strong winds and a blizzard continuing the next day with up to 4m drifts, when the kids had the days off as only a few teachers made it to work and it took that day to restore reasonable road normality. :y :y :y

They do have occasional winters with no snow, where normally they have short mild spells in between their cold bad weather which generally comes from the north and Siberia. Warm spells will be like our January temperatures with rain, cold spells will typically be up to -25degC, but I have known an exceptional -35degC which damaged many trees and other perennial plants. Although it is much colder than the UK with an average temperature of -7degC compare to +5degC here in January and February.

When you buy a car you buy a second set of wheels fitted with winter tyres. If you have nowhere to keep the spare set your local garage will store, fit and remove them for a small annual fee. :y :y :y

Problem is Ukraine for example have consistent heavy snow winters, meaning the do actually plough/grit the roads.

I do have a set of winter tyres in the garage, really could not be bothered to fit them to the 3.2  ::)

Suspect conditions out there even winters would not do much, without properly prepared roads.

I think survey should be the councils do an adequate service on plough/gritting.

Even if the law changed, the chances of getting caught would be about the same as being on your mobile phone..........next to eff all.
I guess you could be caught out at MOT time, but that depends when your MOT is.

It would be a brave government to make it a legal requirement in the UK, where generally we usually have little snow, for snow tyres to be fitted with all the extra expense for poorer motorists just at a time when budgets are already stretched with real incomes going down.

As already said by STEMO, there are not enough traffic police to hunt down all the illegal in car mobile phone users, those without insurance, those without a licence, DD,  etc, etc.  For the police to check every vehicle for snow tyres during such a short period is just unrealistic and unnecessary. ;)

Voted for option 4, as that makes a lot of sense.

We don't have bad enough, or even enough bad weather to even consider winter tyres.

We should stop poncing about and just deal with the few days a year that affect us.

And the option many European countries go for

No need for winter tyres in this country. No need at all. If you cant drive in snow, you cant drive, so sell your car and catch a bus.  ::)

I'm sure that the EU in their wisdom will introduce a directive making it mandatory for all members to enforce the use of winter tyres in the winter months!  ::)

Even in Cyprus and Malta!  ;D

Many retired people stay in off-peak holiday hotels and apartments for the winter in southern Spain with rent from about €300/month. :y

We get snow here sometimes and it is cold and most houses don't have central heating.  One year it was minus 14.C. I had to laugh wnen the UK stopped paying winter fuel allowance to expats in Spain.

It is true that there are bargain winter breaks to be had and on the Costas you might be frost free.

Is it not that winter tyres aren't particularly for snow but for temperatures below something like 7 C regardless of snow or not?

They are.  I've yet to experience winter tyres, but as normal tyres on one of my cars are around £200 a corner,  I'm reluctunt to fork out for tyres I can only use a few months of the year. My Fortwo performed pretty well in the snow with its all season tyres. Apart from the cost, I'd be over run with 5 spare sets of tyres if I played the winter tyre game.

I think it totally depends on the car. On the Volvo, I wouldn't even consider them as I don't think its at all necessary. If I still had the M140i OTOH I wouldn't consider using it without them.

Aye, you get proper snow up in the Troodos Mountains, unlike the farting we get here.  When we lived there, could go water skiing in the morning before the wind got up, then snow skiing in the afternoon :y

Winter tyres do not help the vast majority of drivers who simply can't drive.

I have never shied away from driving in any conditions*, and have never felt the need for winter tyres (and yes, I have used them, they do make a small difference, probably enough to be more than placebo...  ...just).  Only once have I ever been out of control due to weather conditions, and winters would not of stopped my transit sliding down the slope.

* A couple of years ago, I did go the long way round, as when I got to a ford, it looked a bit deep, fast flowing, and slippery for the poor ol' Battlebus.

That is the problem. Winter tyres would just embue a sense of might which would lead to more accidents.

Snow in Malta?  Actually it has happened, but on just 7 occasions since 1858, and then there was no accumulations. Just a dusting. :y

Anyway, Maltese drivers would need far more than winter tyres, or any damn tyre, to make them drive safely! ;D ;D
