Anyone have any experience with heavy duty mesh, steel or Ali as I need to get some kind of secure box or cage made up to fit into the car boot and secure some valuables inside

They had some nice bespoke ones for the new Bentley 4x4 shown on that programme a week or so ago.
Only about £20,000 if I recall!

Was looking for something a bit smaller & cheaper than the Bentley option, something along the lines of a small but sturdy dog cage or similar that takes up half to a third of the boot space of a focus & won’t give me a double hernia if i need to remove it but hopefully deter the more light fingered scum out there, more of a strong deterrent than a fortress

Can’t really see what you’re getting at. If you close the tailgate, the parcel shelf will hide anything in the boot. If anyone forces open the tailgate, they’ll be able to remove your ‘strongbox’ as easily as you would.

I am with Stemo on this. There's plenty of obscure hidey holes in a car without going to any expense.
If you want a conspicuous deterrent which serves a function then a strong box bolted to the car is for you but bear in mind that if scrotes break in and find it, then next time the car will be gone.
If you want to stash something temporarily, then find somewhere suitable and get done, but ffs don't tell anyone.
Chances are scrotes won't find it, but if the car is nicked, you might never see the stash again.
Either way, get a tracker fitted. ;)

If the items aren't very deep, build a false floor in the boot. I knew a carpenter that did this and you could not tell it was a false floor when looking in the rear window. :y

You can’t see the boot floor from a rear window.

You can if it is an Astra estate without a parcel shelf which was he default setup.

Focus. Plus, if you were going to leave the load cover off, the question would be a bit moot...wouldn’t it?

Gun or Pistol Cabinet they come in all sorts of shapes and sizes, a lot cheaper if you buy them in plain steel and paint them (Hamerite) yourself :-)
