I was using WEP encryption on my Linksys router......
But the other day noticed it could do WPA......so thought I'd change to it...so changed it on the router.....then noticed I didnt have the WPA option on my laptop driver :(
But I thought the laptop card must be able to WPA, coz it came with the router.....
I had an older Linksys router and replaced it after it broke.......but i must have not updated the laptop driver for the newer card.
So onto Linksys site for the correct driver........it wasnt available for download :( Version 1/2/3/7 was there, but my card is version 5 :(
Did a search on google and found a chat forum.....apparently according to the forum.....V5 was taken off the linksys site because of 'issues' with the driver/software. But I found a link eventually to the driver/software on the Linksys site and downloaded the V5 version :y
But can I get it to work........no I bloody carnt >:(
It can see my card fine.....and will search for access points, so I know the driver/card is fairly happy......but will it connect to my router....NO.....I even tried disabling encryption totally (temp) and it still wont connect to my router.
I think it must be the flakey software that installs with the driver and can see why Linksys have removed it off the 'obvious' download page.
So Ive uninstalled the V5 software and gone back to using XP to configure the card using the V5 driver.......however choice of using WPA has also disapeared........so back to using WEP :(
Better than none I guess!

Linksys are Naff
Bought some wireless kit for my lappy a few years ago, more hassle than it was worth.
Recently bought a Lynksys N.A.S. Box. same story, more hassle than it's worth, currently sat on shelf and switched off. :-/

Right you are!
The chances are slim of someone with the tools to crack your WEP turning up when I bet they can find an open connection within 1/2 a mile.
Treat yourself to a new card when you can though, they are pretty cheap now.
Linksys card on Amazon (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Linksys-Wireless-G-Card-SpeedBooster-802-11g/dp/B0002LHXAW/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=electronics&qid=1218739119&sr=8-1)

Linksys (the blue and black) was good reliable kit. The horrid silver stuff is average, as Cisco tried to seperate the Cisco and Linksys brands.

My old Linksys (blue/black) broke (wireless on it gave up working)
Thats what I have now a silver/grey one

TD - I'd replace the kit to stuff that is secure - it is very dangerous to run without security (or WEP, which is same thing).

or disable wireless, and use a cable ;D

That would mean walking........the only walking i do is walking Holly ;D :y
But see your point......the Link Bandit127 provided certainly gives food for thought :y
Wouldnt be able to use the speedbooster bit i dont think, as the router carnt do that.....but notice the card can do WPA :y
Did find a cheaper card on Amazon, for £12, but in the description it only mentions WEP......so im no better off with that card...
Mind tho i am serious about a neighbour......not sure which one tho....
They have obviously bought a router, taken it outa the box and turned it on without changing ANY default settings :o
I can hop onto it anytime I like ;D
Its even still set with the manu default admin password ;D

As soon as I find it, I'll let you know the model, see if drivers still available for it. I used it wpa under XP SP2, so should be easy enough to get driver, as SP3 doesn't break things like SP2 did...
