Title: DNS Servers - one for the experts
Post by: Bandit127 on 14 August 2008, 18:19:06
Hi All

My ISP is Virgin (ex NTL) so if I want quick, reliable surfing I have to look elsewhere for DNS servers. What are you guys using? Anyone using DNSSEC?

I have been using OpenDNS here for a couple of weeks and it's been very good. Fast, reliable and they patched up quickly last week.

TIA.

I've been fighting DNS issues all day.

Most decent ISPs provide a good DNS service.  The key is, if you manually set them, is to pick 2 geographically diverse ones.  You're ISP should do this for you if you leave it to auto.

Sorry about that - obviously aware that is what wiped the forum out the other day.

Not sure . I have been on NTL (now Virgin) on and off for the last 5 years and they have had fairly regular DNS issues that, in my opinion, slowed or prevented surfing. Trasparent proxy issues aside... And The Register reported that large ISPs were slow to patch (http://www.theregister.co.uk/2008/07/25/isps_slow_to_patch/) a few weeks ago.

Perhaps I am unfairly biased but surfing does seem a lot 'smoother' since I swapped DNS server.

The DNS issues today affected 8m users across multiple ISPs ::).  We don't get DNS issues with OOF, as it runs from my servers ;D

When I said decent ISPs have decent DNS, I meant decent ISPs.... ;)
