Title: 2.6 mv6 intermittent starting problem.
Post by: gazzap on 30 May 2018, 14:32:04
Hey all, currently having a problem with my 2.6 omega estate, this group has been a godsend since purchasing my first omega, any queries or problems I've had i have found answer to on this forum, but this one has stumped me. Its recently been failing to start, sometimes it will and sometimes it will just turn over, no fault codes appear when it fails to start, but if i leave it for a while and go back it will randomly fire up fine, ive changed the crank sensor for a genuine one from Vauxhall (£81  :'( ) checked all of the vacuum lines, fuel pump etc etc, battery is brand new, recently had a service, so have written all of the basic problems out. Im worried to drive her now as forking out for constant low loaders is hurting my wallet  :D atm ive got someone repairing my key as it won't re-sync with the car after a battery change, he did diagnose a faulty transponder ring, but I'm a slightly sceptical as the EML has never flashed me when its failed to start, any ideas or help would be highly appreciated, i don't want to get rid of her but i can't live with this as a common fault, thankyou  :)

Recall the Estate fuel pump can be a bit weak when tank is a bit low, have you changed the fuel filter? Worth doing as it's a service item.  :y

Ive never let her get low on fuel and she always has the best  (shell v power) , and fuel filter was changed during the service too mate  :-\

Could be the fuel pump beginning to fail, but you wouldn't be the first person to be given a duff new crank sensor :-\

When it fails to start, does the spanner light flash?  :-\

Sounds fuel pump to me, crank sensor would not allow it to fire. Sometimes immobiliser issues can cut it out after starting, but the spanner light would be flashing. (as you mention key sync issues)

I really hope so, was going to be the first thing i changed when the problem started, but i thought that a fuel pump would either work or it wouldent, i didn't know they could be intermittent  ::) ha! I will change it tomorrow and see how it goes  :y thankyou matey :)

When i did the pedal test the spanner light flashed me, so that defiantly works, unlike the rest of the car atm  ;D

Being an Estate check for fuel leakage under rear of petrol tank.

When it fails again, try this, key out, open door, shut door, lock door, unlock door, open door, shut door, key in, slowly go to poss 1, 2 then start.

Any other Keys with Transponder on the same key ring?

I had this on my 2.6 and it turned out clip holding plug onto throttle area was broke and the plug was drifting off causing intermittent connection and subsequent stalling. Just put a tie wrap round ot till i get round to splicing a new plug onto the loom.

Thankyou for the help guys!, turned out be the fuel pump and the filter in the tank, the filter had tons of metal clogging it, starving the pump, she has started every time since its been changed, just got to clean petrol tank out now to make sure it doesn't happen again  ;D

Given that the tank is plastic, you need a new pump :y

Yep i put a brand new pump and filter in and cleaned out as much of the metal crap as i could with a magnet stick, but want to make sure its clean as possible, but also need to 2 new straps for the tank, there rusted  :o

Remove straps one at a time if neccessrry and get a local enginnering shop to cut you some replacements .preferably in galv or stainless. ( they may be able to put a small curve /lip on the side for you too if you wish)Problem solved for good..
This used to be an issue on most older cars like the first carltons ,senators and mantas etc but in those cases the tank was metal so more often thannot ended up leaking when you removed the straps . ,

The tank was never dropped (well that i know of, shes had a hell of hard life from the previous owners) but needs to be cleaned out completely to stop the new filter being clogged with the remaining metal particles, and while its off i get 2 new straps made, theres a couple of metal fabrication places around my area ill go have a with, thankyou for the help everyone, fell in love with the miggy all over again  :y
