Title: Shipwreck looters
Post by: BazaJT on 23 June 2018, 15:37:00
Two men have been sentenced to 4yrs and 3 1/2yrs respectively for fraud and failing to report their haul to the receiver of wrecks after looting HMS Hermes which was sunk by U-Boat in the channel in 1914 with the loss of 44 lives.Apparently the artefacts they'd recovered and [some] sold has been valued at £150,000.

In South East Asia, WW2 shipwrecks which are classified as war graves have systematically dismantled for the scrap metal by criminal gangs.  :(

Some of the things they'd removed from Hermes were sold for scrap too.The condenser was one such item that went to the scrap man.In a way I think this makes it worse as they weren't even doing it to preserve things by selling on to collectors etc.

And it was Argentinian scrap metal looters that landed in South Georgia that the Argentine Junta used as their excuse for invading the Falklands. >:( >:( >:( Mine you the RN did add a bit more scrap metal at Grytviken by damaging and then capturing the Argentinean submarine Santa Fe. :y :y :y
