whenever I touch the brakes at any kind of speed above 30mph there is a shudder felt through steering wheel. the brakes were checked by a local garage & deemed to be ok. however the wishbones have a slight play in the bushes on both sides. so put it down to them. it has 10 mths mot on it so worth getting a pair. but where from ? :-\

Worn wishbones don't make your brakes shudder imo.
Symptoms more like a violent knock or pulling in one direction or another :-\
If its a judder, i'd be looking at something loose or warped around the disc's or callipers :y

the brakes were checked . the shudder is not too bad , but there . it seems to be touch brakes ( they pull up ok } & shudder is more on the steering column.

I agree with tigers. Ime worn wishbone bushes dont cause shuddering of the wheel. More like sharp pulls sideways when braking/cornering. If it was me i would change the brake discs and pads even though someone checked them. If that dont help i would check wheel balancing.

I would guess that the backside of the discs are worn and rusty and makes it brake uneven. Even though outside of the rotors look good doesn't necessary means that the back side is good.
To get a good judgement on the brakes you have to take the calipers off and look at the discs back side. I doubt that your guy did that.

Ray, do you brake firmly and then, once stopped hold the car on the footbrake, rather than go into neutral and apply the handbrake?

Had this on an XJ8 . . .warped disc. New discs sorted it instantly

Exactly what I was suggesting, Mr. Blue - holding the car on the footbrake when the discs are warm/hot causes them to warp, as differential cooling takes place and they buckle! :(

Worn bushes can cause a shudder, seen it a few times.......as the toe goes out due to the worn bush the theory goes that the tyre gets some side load which when released (as the tread skips)

Worn bushes defo can cause a shudder, like a warped disc - anyone who drove the Pussy when I first got it will testify :D - but IME, its not as consistent as a warped disc.
But if you have play in the bushes, that certainly needs to be fixed first.

Mine does shudder a little when braking from speed so it probably needs new discs too. and bushes etc etc...

I tend to do that, as lights heading out of work can be quite long. Gets quite tiring holding foot brake :D
Although I don't put on the handbrake, just pop it in N. Flick to D when we get to go. :)

I never slam down on the brake & I usually go into neutral and apply handbrake.

that's what I am tending to put it down to

A DTI (dial test indicator) mounted and rotation of the disc would point to how much the disc or wheel bearing deviates from true, which is what I would do first.
plus, check the caliper guides for play and wear,
and check all suspension components for excessive play anyway
