Title: Technical question regarding transmissions.
Post by: Big Fra on 16 August 2008, 23:23:55
What sort of power/torque figures can a 2.0 autobox cope with?
Also, what would be the strongest oe clutch if I kept the manual box?
Toying with an engine swap, the 2.5 doesn't do it anymore.
Not sure if I want a man or auto plaything.

Any ideas/info?

On my pdf info sheet it says for the 4L30E:
350Nm/258 lb-Ft (Maximum Engine Torque)

600 Nm/440 lb-ft (Maximum gearbox input torque)

I always thought the slushmatics were weak, prob stick with a manual then.

I am looking at a min 300hp/280lb-ft.

More to follow. ;)

That's an easy one. Playthings must be manual, surely?  8-)

Less hassle if you're doing something "non standard", too.

Yeah, non standard. ;)

I just like the feel of an auto sometimes, the mazda is a slushbox, and is ok for a 2.0 4cyl.

Just fancy a little bit more, but seeing as I have got an auto, and swmbo's puddle jumper is a manual (with no guts) I think a manual is prob the best for me.

I am a big manual fan, but I must say my 3.0 Elite feels so "gutsy" that I seem to leave most things behind even with the slushbox.

Having had a good tutorial from the master of autoboxes, I believe it's only the bit that Vauxhall added onto the gearbox that is the weakest point (Especially the first thrust washer). I now have a Sonnax thrust washer. Since my gearbox has been taken apart, checked, serviced and rebuilt, it really is a pleasure to drive, despite my love for manuals :y

That reminds me, Mr Sassanach if you are reading this thread, send me your email address - I have a paypal transaction for those parts with your name on it - I just don't know where to send!!
