Title: Decent sounding speakers for TV
Post by: theolodian on 04 December 2006, 10:31:23
I'm looking for better sound than the speakers in my tv are giving.  Had a dvd surround system but it died.  What is the best sound that I can get for about £150 (not the loudest)?  I have been considering amplified computer speakers with a sub, like the little Bose system.  However, the sound of the Bose is not at all balanced.  It is bright at the top, and dead in the middle.

I would prefer separates, but don't have the money right now.  Back in the states I have B&W towers and a Denon amp.  Any suggestions for sound systems, including amp and speakers at a minimum?

If you can find one....

Videologic Digitheatre DTS system.
All in one, and quite simply superb! :)

Edit. Videologic made 2 systems. The normal digitheatre (ok system) and the vastly more impressive DTS system. They do come up on ebay every so often, and will certainly come in under your budget now (cost me £400!)

Cool, thanks.  Yeah, I am poking around eBay but have little idea what to search for!  :y

Spend it on shipping and a 240v-110v step down transformer

Or I can buy similar stuff used here!  Thanks for the idea!  Already found some speakers;

No. They are the lower spec ones. Ok, but not a patch on the DTS system.

 :o :o :o

You got a nightclub in your house Mark? The sound system we use on the disco is 1000W RMS and that is bloody loud when cranked up - in a house it would make your ears bleed!! ::) ;)

I dont run it flat out but, it does make the windows rattle....for true hifi you want to be aiming at running an amp to max of 50% of its rated out put to avoid distotion and clipping on the peeks.

The is 5 speakers plus sub.....

Just do what I did and that was get a Pioneer amp and a set of floor standing mission speaker bloody loud and they do the job. Had the neighbours complain a few times about the bass. Work well hooked up to the TV aswell.

You can get them pretty cheap off of ebay, worth a look.

Just my tuppence worth :y

I don't want to get too broad-ranging with this.  However, it has lead me to find B&W bookshelf speakers and an Arcam Alpha amp on eBay.  Looks like I could get all of it for less than £100!  May not be easy to add a powered sub to that amp, but should sound darn good for the money either way.

I may end up liking this eBay malarkey after all  :P :)

Ebay is great if you know where to find stuff.  I've just bought a new fuel filter for £1.  Best of luck with your bargain hunting Theo.  :y
