Title: Maths Trick
Post by: M16 on 18 August 2008, 07:44:08
Here is a math's trick so unbelievable that it will stump you. Personally I would like to know who came up with this and why that person is not running the country. ..

1. Grab a calculator. (You won't be able to do this one in your head)
2. Key in the first three digits of your home phone number (NOT the area code)
3. Multiply by 8
4. Add 1
5. Multiply by 250
6. Add the last 3 digits of your phone number
7. Add the last 3 digits of your phone number again.
8. Subtract 250
9. Divide number by 2
Do you recognize the answer!!

Don't be.  You type in your phone number, add some other numbers and then take them away again.  You're left with your phone number.  ::)

Now if it could tell me the lottery numbers, that'd be another thing...   8-)

It's a good job this bloke is not running the country. Bean counters should never be put in charge of countries, companies or public bodies.

It's  a fact of life. Gordon Brown? QED.

Shouldn't stump anyone who can do simple arithmetic!  All it does is multiply the the first half of your number by 1000, shifting it 3 places left, then adds the last 3 digits.

The add 1, take away 250, add your last 3 digits twice and divide by 2 are just distractions.

Quite. Smoke & mirrors.

Smoke is the big numbers you can't do in your head. Mirrors is the add 1, times by 250 divide by 2 etc.

Try it with your birthdate in DD MM YY format. (e.g 060562)

I have a 7 digit number and hence why it fails!

2. Enter your number
3. Multiply by 8 (to get it bigger)
4. Add 1 (smoke screen 1)
5. Multiply by 250 (this makes it 2000 times bigger so you dont notice the 3 first digits of your number plus an addition 250 as part of the smoke screen to hide the addition of your last three digits in the next stage)
6. Add the last 3 digits of your phone number (you have now filled in the 3 lower digits)
7. Add the last 3 digits of your phone number again. (add them again so you dont notice!)
8. Subtract 250 (takes the additional 250 off that came about from adding the 1)
9. Divide number by 2

Easy enough to do.

Note that most of the steps are so you dont notice that the answer displays any obvious part of your phone number during the calc.
